For those who say the swim is too short. Time to put up or ....you know the rest

Great news for the fishies who always complain that the swim leg is too short. New from Jeff Henderson, RD extraordinaire:

That looks interesting. Hope this race makes it! I’d think about doing it next year. This year Du Worlds are that weekend.

In general, I like the format – you want on-course nutrition, you bring it.

My one complaint – EVERY swimmer needs a kayak? And a GPS? That’s asking a bit much, I think. Why not just start on one side and say “Swim to that dock over there on the other side.” Provide a lead boat and some support craft and call it good.

There is a $10,000 purse though, which should make for some nice payouts for a few folks…

mm

looks great except having to bring your own kayaker during the swim.

i noticed on the map they have the stop signs marked. Does that mean everyone will have to stop at each stop sign?

You know…I’m beginning to hope that I haven’t been my gullible self and in my excitement on hearing about this race, indavertantly passed on an April Fool’s day joke! Jeff does have a sense of humour sharper than a sharp thing.

Well, the $300 entry fee seems a bit much for this race. Especially if I need my own kayacker AND I will have to stop at each stop sign (no police). It would make me wonder where the money is going. And normally I am all over new indie races.

Doh!..I think I fell for it. I’m just trying to picture 300 swimmers, each with their own Kayak support, mayhem. Guess I should have read more carefully!!!

Yeah, $300 is a lot… most half irons are $180 or so!

I do like the distances though. Races with long swims = made for tigerchiks.

GOTCHA!

But I think I might hold the race anyway - too many people have come forward with interest. And I think it’d be a hell of a lot of fun. That’s why we do this, yes?

I was a swimmer in college. Triathlon swims are generally too short, from a swimmer perspective. This one would not be. But that’s only part of the fun - the pleasure and accomplishment of swimming across something, or the length of something, or around something, is rare these days. Let’s take the natural environment and use it, not work against it.

This race might not be “half-iron” distance or any other standard, but that makes it all the more appealing. You, a lake to conquer, and a summer day.

I can think of few things better.

Why you sidewinding, bushwhacking, hornswaggling, crunker croker…got me hook line and sinker!

(apologies to the Blazing Saddles fans)
.

You were a swimmer long before college…

I am interested. The bike is by far my weakest leg and is relatively short. I remember going on vacation to the finger lakes when I lived in Baldwinsville. Keep meaning to go to your race but something keeps coming up. Right now it is my complete lack of fitness.

looks great except having to bring your own kayaker during the swim.

As long as you have a boy/girlfriend/wife/husband that isn’t a total wuss this should be no problem =)

Or, if they are a total badass and doing the event with you, then yeah you got a problem

$300 for an unsupported race? Looks like WTC just got beat.

I guess I need a tow rope and row boat so she can pull the kids as well. Better be one hell of a steak and lobster dinner to get her to agree to that.

Just a general ironman swim question.

Why was 2.4 miles choosen? I mean I get why a marathon distance was the distance that was picked. But why 2.4 mile swim and not 2.5 or 2 miles? And while we are at it what did 112 miles represent?

What do 2.4 mile swim and 112 mi bike ride represent?

get a canoe, put the kids in there! come on now!

Last time I checked, WTC was beyond $500. Still a ways to go before we get to that level of excellence!

They were the distances of already existing races in Hawaii
