For those of you who are slim fit triathletes (I.e. 6’ 155-170 lbs or the equivalent), do you just never eat pizza or indulge in a dessert from time to time or what?
These last 20 lbs are really stubborn. Granted I havent been in the 170’s since high school, I’m 6 foot and seem to have leveled off at 190. Last year I was 208 all Summer. Did the low carb thing for several months and shed off weight. I’ve fallen back into a more balanced diet with carbs but as I said, I’m pretty much stuck at 190. I really feel 170-175 would be within reason. I’m thinking I may have to go back on the low carb thing again but that diet is tough to stick to and if I have learned anything I’ve learned you have to just make something a routine rather than a fad diet. How do you guys manage to get your weight down and keep it off. Are you just always super strict with your diet?

I’m about 6’1.5" and 175, and have been since age 21. I eat whatever kind of food i feel the craving for but i watch very carefully the amount of food, i.e. total number of calories/day intake vs total burned off. I do a rough calc of cal burned and cals consumed every day; usually i can do the math in my head but occasionally i’ll get out the calculator. I eat pizza, cheeseburgers, cheese toast, fried chicken, sausage and cheese sandwiches, bologna and cheese sandwiches, PB&J sandwiches, mac and cheese, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, country ham, etc, so obv i am not denying myself any foods but then again, i religiously watch the total cal in vs out. This seems to work for me and, in case anyone is worrying about cholesterol, etc, my blood chemistry numbers always come back lower than vegetarian Boston marathoners:)

6’, 160 pounds. I could probably get lower but I eat what ever I want. The last week Ive eaten 6 big blocks of chocolate, a burger and fries, a large pizza, bacon and eggs, pasta, 2 bags of microwave popcorn, 4 * 1 litre strawberry/yogurt/ice/banana/milk smoothie, plenty of veggies (lots of potatoes) and fruit, steak and I can’t remember what else.
5’9" and 142lbs here. Watching what you eat is so important, but once in a while I do pig out. In general I try to avoid processed food and added sugars as much as possible. Other than that, I recover with plant-based fuel only. 80% kitchen, 20% exercise in my experience when it comes to maintaining desired weight. And weight matters a lot, especially for running!

Wtf ?! Seriously? How are you 160 lbs? Wth am I doing wrong that I can’t seem to get much below 188? What volume of exercise are you doing on an average week? You must be burning calories.

True. Seriously - now its written down I probably should eat a little better. Genetics maybe. Don’t know. 15 hours - Recently has been more though, so Im loosing weight. 3 weeks to my 3rd ironman since June, so I guess I burn a few.
How much are you training? For me, intermittent long workout days combined with steady daily workouts are the fastest way to shave off the lbs (e.g., maybe your Saturday has 4 or 5 or 6 hour bike ride and an hour swim). When I do that, I go into such calorie deficit that I can hardly eat enough during the rest of the week to keep from losing weight.
But the key is the big workout day…for me. I see lots of people that do their 45-60 or whatever minutes per day and their body just adjusts to eating an extra 500-1000 calories to compensate.
Female, 5’7", 118. At most muscular about 125. Never struggled with weight. Yes, it is good genes, but it’s also about knowing calories in/out; knowing how much time you’re exercising in a “fat burning” zone vs. aerobic and anaerobic training; eating well on a carbohydrate/protein/fat ratio, etc. I do have times–like everybody–where I get a little out of control in terms of how much I eat, but I usually balance it out over the course of a week in terms of how much and what I want to ingest. But overall, I don’t keep myself from treating myself to a piece of cake, the occasional hamburger, etc. I just limit myself to ~200 “bad” calories a day.
So unfortunately, my advice is nothing you haven’t heard before. Be sensible with what and how much you eat. I find that the less refined sugar I eat, the less I crave it. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
I’m 6’3" about 175lbs. I eat whatever I feel like, although to be honest most of the time it is decently healthy because I actually enjoy that food. Even when I do eat like shit, I don’t gain anything do to my crazy fast metabolism. That same metabolism that I hated in highschool for making me a walking replica of Gumby now comes in quite useful!
Lost 15 pounds easy this summer. Tri training provides a ton of workout time i.e. calorie loss. Combine that with cutting back on sugars (I cut out my daily soda), bad carbs (white bread, processed foods), concentrate on lean protein (substituted morning bagel and cereal with eggs and/or turkey bacon or oatmeal), and institute some portion control (still ate pizza, just ate 2 slices instead of 4, would eat a cheeseburger, but not a cheeseburger and a hot dog). When I got hungry or wanted to much, I would have popcorn or at night after a workout before bed I would eat a banana with peanut butter to make me feel full. Other than that, I ate what I wanted and trained for triathlon.
Yes, I’m very strict with my diet but I don’t count calories, use phone apps or anything. My strategies are:
Plan my weekly meals and cook at home. That keeps me from eating crap.
No added sugars (on cereal, coffee, no sodas, no juice, desserts)
Eat healthy (lean meats, tons of veggies, whole grains sporadically)
Weight myself everyday to keep track of changes.
Treat myself once a week and eat anythiing I want (pizza, burgers, processed grains and always a huge dessert). I usually gain 2-3 lbs on the weekend due to my “cheat meal” but go back to my regular weight during the week.
I’ve learned to be hungry all the time. Your body is amazing at being efficient. If you’ve plateaud, you need to change something. Probably have to cut down on your calories or work out more until you reach your next plateau.
Cutting down on carbs works, but only because you’re also cutting down on calories. Don’t do it if you’re in a big block of training or nearing a big race though.
6’-1" and race at 155 lbs. I have to work at not going below that as my bike power starts to suffer. In the off season I usually like to get up to 165 lbs which usually happens with the reduced training load and less of a focus on what I eat. In general I eat well, big focus on lots of veggies as I find I recover quicker with a clean diet. I eat pizza a lot, usually once a week - and a lot of it. I’ll take down a large by myself if I’m hungry enough! I don’t avoid dessert, but I certainly don’t have it everyday. And a lot of the time its just something like a greek yogurt with chia seeds in it etc. At 155 lbs I am pretty low body fat - probably 9%, but I think my weight has a lot to do with having little muscle mass. I could lift everyday for months and probably hardly gain a pound, which is fine for endurance sports, but I don’t think I’ll ever win a 100m or a bike race in a sprint!
Fad diets will never work, a heavy training load helps, but if you don’t fuel properly you’ll hang onto fat, or even put more on. Low carb is bad idea if you are doing any kind of serious training - you’ll compromise your training and your body composition. Now cutting out the empty carbs like sugar, processed crap etc will help immensely. Get your carbs from whole, plant based foods. FWIW I was 203 lbs after high school, I’ve never focused on losing weight its just happened over the last 8 years with consistent exercise and being more and more conscious of what I put in my body. I figure the 80-20 rule is good - 80% of the time I look at food as fuel and eat as clean as possible, 20% of the time is entertainment - I eat it if it tastes good and I feel like it!
