For slowbern - melanistic blue jay

Thought you might like to see this odd version at the feeder - not the best pics since they are through glass. Unfortunately never got one with the crest showing.

Wow, that’s a cool looking blue jay.

Yeah - what’s really neat is how when the light hits fully it almost fades completely to white - since the blue is not a pigment but refractory light. The bottom shows it best, though not the best shot since he shows up in the morning and is usually heavily backlit.

You should send those pics to some bird or wildlife journals because they may be interested in publishing them.

You know I am a sucker for good bird pics. These are great shots in my opinion. I like how close-up they are. I also like that feeder. Thanks for directing me this way!

Any chance you can direct me to a good online bird ID guide for the northern VA area? We recently hung a few feeders, and there are a few specimens I can’t seem to place.

well if you are iPod / iPhone enabled - go here - http://www.hmhbooks.com/peterson/ - Peterson’s has been my only birding guide for the last 20+ years, and it is now in app format - spring for the full price, the free app is limited. If you are more android inclined - you might give this a try - http://www.audubonguides.com/field-guides/bird-identification-app.html - though I have never been as fond of the NAS guides - they are a little too photo dependent, and figuring out quick field identifiers is trickier. On the other hand, this has some nice functions that list species in your area, which would make searching easier.

Caveat is I still work by book for ident when needed, though I don’t often have to refer to them anymore. I have not test driven any of these apps, but both are pretty reputable.

Just snagged it for my iphone. $0.99 spring sale, down from $14. Thanks!
