? for all you shoe gurus

so i have always ran in the asics 2100 series although i have a nutrual gate, had it analyzied by many different people. i guess i just like the posting they have. i ran into some problems with the 2140 particularly in my meditarsal pads. i switched to the saucony ride and they didnt have enough arch support and hurt my feet. since then i went back to the 2140s but in the meantime have tried about 15 different shoes, no joke, my shoe store is pretty rad. but saw a PT and he said i have developed a case of mortons nueroma in my left foot. i have tried other shoes but they all give me pressure and make my toes go numb execpt the saucony fasttwitch. i know they are some what of a racing flat but they do have some posting. they will prolly only last about 200 miles but i am okay with that. i get a pretty good discount on them. my question is can i wear them as a training shoe. right now i run between 30 and 40 miles a week with my long runs around 15 miles? thanks for you help guys

The Saucony Fastwitch is NOT a racing flat. It is a lightweight trainer and an excellent shoe. You can train in it if it is working for you. They aren’t very long lasting though, although their new outsole mater on the Fastwtich3 is a lot better than the 2.

If you truly have a Morton’s neuroma though, simply changing from the GT2140 to a Fastwitch shouldn’t really make that much of a difference. Classic “metatarsalgia” - maybe.

I also have a nueroma and have found that I have to wear a wider shoe. I have gone from an 11.5 regular width to a 12.5 2E in my running shoes(cumulus 10) and man what a difference. I was trying to wear the normal width shoes just as everyday shoes but they still hurt foot, actually found cheap cumulus 9 in a 12.5 2E on ebay. I was already wearing a sidi mega but am considering a pair of rocket 7 in a 2E or 3E. I also went to a 13 wide in work boots and the nueroma does not bother me much at all.

I had a mortons neuroma as well. Switching to a wider shoe helped for a while, but I eventually had to have surgery. My foot pain still comes back sometimes. See a good ortho doc. This can become a major annoyance, and I found that shoes and inserts didn’t help much after a while.

I do all of my training in the Fastwitch (the 3 is more durable than the 2) and the Asics DS racer. I switched over from the Asics GT 2120. Take your time transitioning to doing your mileage in the lighter shoe and you should be fine.

wound up with one from 2110s. in my case it wasn’t how narrow the shoe was, but rather it was too wide and my foot would slide outward into the shoe wall with every stride. Lots of ibuprofen, ice and PF sport inserts took care of it. I however have since switched shoes to a more neutral shoe.

This past season, I did most of my racing and training in the fastwitch 3. This included several longer runs (15 - 20 miles) and an IM marathon. They do wear out quickly and I wasn’t too good about replacing them when I needed too, but it’s a great shoe. I just bought a neutral saucony trainer that I’m going to do my training in (so I don’t wear them out as quickly), but I’ll still probably race in a new pair of fastwitch 3s. If you need a wide shoe, I don’t know if you will like them. I have pretty narrow feet and they felt great.

I can’t speak to the neuroma vs metatarsalgia, like rroof can , but I got a pair of the Fasttwitch 3s cheap and have used them for all manner of runs. they’re nice, but they sure aren’t a flat. I’m pretty easy on shoes, but so far they are doing fine.

Actually, I prefer my type A for most runs, including up to IM and they are way less of a shoe than the FT3. When they die I’m going to be unhappy. if you can find a pair, snag them.

What is a neuroma?

you can google it for a more specific answer but its pretty much a inflamation of the one of the nerves in you foot, particularly on the pad. it makes my second biggest toe go numb and it is quite painful later into the run and if i stand for a while. i have spent the week with the fasttwitch 2 and fell much better and since no one said it was a bad idea im gonna roll with it.

thanks ST!

I was having very bad Morton’s Neuroma type pain, tried these at the suggestion of someone on Slowtwitch, and (I hate to even say it - kinda like saying you haven’t flatted for a long time), the problem seems to be solved (it’s been over a year since I’ve felt the pain):

I also really like the Fastwitch. I replaced the insole that comes in them with the linsco above.

(I also use Superfeet in my bike shoes. Lighter insoles with very slight metatarsal support.)

I’m no guru but i did have the ASICS 2130’s and developed problems in my great toe joint. I switched to the Mizuno waverider 12 and i have been very happy. it breaks the same way the ASICS 2100 series shoes do but there is a lot more cushion.
