Couple of upsets yesterday with euro powers getting knocked out.
Flamengo’s got some flair, and their fans seem fun.
Al Hilal had a strong counter attack and that was a fun game to go to overtime to decide it.

Yep, a couple of good upsets yesterday. I caught the City v Al Hilal game, good stuff.
Too bad I’m going to miss the RM/Juv game, but will be sure the watch the night game again tonight.
The heat and humidity have made me worry a bit about how next year’s world cup will play out. Playing in 90F and high humidity definitely favors some styles of play over others (and this is a winter sport for most of the world); and one horrible hot day could have a lasting impact throughout the rest of the tournament. …similar to teams struggling in their next game after playing in Manaus in the 2014 world cup.
During one of the games (forget which), the commentator was saying the Brazilian’s have an advantage being more used to the heat/humidity than the other (Euro) team they were playing. Meh.
And news was reporting the Juve coach said 10 of his players indicated they wanted to be subbed as they were losing, because they were “tired”. I think that’s a bit whiny.
Re: the World Cup – my view is these guys are pros. They should be able to avail themselves of the best nutritional science and training methods to be able to prepare for the conditions they are likely to face. And there are always both teams facing the same conditions in any game.
I agree. I’ve seen several articles about the heat and the WC next year, and they strike me a click-bait.
The pros in MLS play in the same summer heat every year.
I’m looking forward to tonight’s USMNT game!
I’m feeling much better about the future of the USMNT. We have Diego Luna. He’s only 21.
His first 16 mins were magical. Good to hold on for the win. I’m expecting us to play Mexico next. But we’ll see.
My observation on Freese. He needs to come off his line and take charge of any crosses, corners, and balls that come into the 6yard box. He sits back too much on those.
Sad news for Liverpool, and soccer.
Crap, that sucks. His brother was also killed. They were only 28 and 29. Hard to imagine what the family is going through.
Newly married too.
Yeah he was on an incredible run of soccer successes and just got married to the mother of his kids. Pretty much went out at probably the peak of his life.
Games resume this weekend.
Looking forward to watching both Brazilian clubs on the one side of the bracket (sorry Chelsea). And the all Euro affair on the other.
And of course, the US vs Mexico final.
Wasn’t able to catch the game, but saw the score line. Oh well.
When we have close games against “powerhouses” like Guatemala, etc. it’s not surprise to come up short against Mexico.
We’ve got a ways to go to be competitive be the elites at the national level. Next few months until the World Cup are worrisome.
Meanwhile club World Cup games have been quality soccer.
PSG v Bayern, and RM v Dortmund were both great finishes.
Semis and Finals to come.
Watched the game. US were shit. Second half had some one touch combination play in the final third that was promising but ultimately we didn’t create any chances and were chasing most of the game. 65/35 possession split to Mexico.
We played a lot of negative balls and gave away a lot as well.
We were fortunate to be in the final but Mexico deserved the win.
Yeah, I watched too. Mexico deserved the win.
Fluminense vs. Chelsea at 3pm today in a semifinal.
Real Madrid vs. PSG at 3pm Weds in the other semi.
Why are these games scheduled in the middle of the day on a weekday? I doubt MetLife stadium has an evening event on those days.
No kidding. Fortunately I’m able to record today’s game on TNT with my streaming service. Tomorrow’s game is on DAZN so I’m going to completely miss it. As far as I can tell, you’d need to upgrade DAZN to record or watch playbacks. grrr
Gutted when I woke up to the push alert. It has really rocked the sports world. Even Wimbledon allowed non-white items for remembrance. Sounds as if he was speeding meaning it was avoidable. So sad.
When I read that the car was a Lamborghini, I figured speed was a factor too. Damage so severe they couldn’t tell who was in the driver’s seat.
