Raced Folsom TRI today. Had a blast!! First Intl in years…I never should have stopped. Got to actually race again (versus plodding in the IM). Anyway, Swim stunk (But it was expected…no fairy tales), Bike was good , and run was great. I was worried about the bike because this year I reduced my bike miles by 40% as I have increased my run mileage 20%. Some perceived power loss on the bike (one gear lower than normal) but the gains on the run might have made up for it. I Next year I hope to do a 3 INtls and 1 1/2 (and be more consistent in the swim training). I left before the results came out so no idea what my splits were. How was everyone else’s race? How did the conditions compare with past Folsom TRI races?
Oly distance is a lot of fun. I did long course for a while but went back to oly stuff about three years ago and I love it. Let’s me put the hammer down but still survive the season with my marriage intact!
Since you were there, did you see who won the smackdown between Cousin Elwood and h20fun ???
Results are up. Very embarassed about the swim but pleased with the run. This was the last TRI of the year for me as I head into my Fall running schedule.
TRI Goals for 2008:
Improve the damn swim: I really need to stay consistent on the swim and not take time off. I just can’t give everyone a 10 minute headstart. I might look into local Master’s since I can’t do it myself.
Take Dev’s transitions 101 seminar with the emphasis on getting the wetsuit off of my big feet.
Bike: tough call. I think I am maxed out given my current training focus.
Run: Maybe a tad bit faster…but I am getting older.
I did not do too bad for an old guy

Wish I could run like you, or the guy who kicked my butt.
Sure was super weather!! Great run race.
And Brad did a great job as usual annoncing.
But, wanting for Dennis to comment about or smackdown or the old guys.

I have done nothing but Oly distance max this season! I have done over 10 races already.
Yep, the shorter stuff, for me, is a race. I have no desire to go long again, even though
I may do it for long slow training.
Thanks. All the Track and Tempos paid off. It would be more relaxing to swim like most y’all so my bike/ run could be more strategic versus the stress and panic of not knowing how far everyone is ahead of me.
Steve Chavez is a stud. I keep telling the Senior (50+) members in my running club about this guy and they are glad he is not club road racing…he would probably be among the leaders in the Long Course Grand Prix Standings (and taking their prize money and/or comps).
Unfortunately, you can’t have a weakness in the Intl distance. And I do. My mindset now is to improve my swim and continue the Intls rather than try to go longer with the belief that I will have more time to catch up on the run (cuz that didn’t always work either).
Looking at your results, if you spend the off season like I did 5 days a week masters, you would kill.
2 years ago I did the FIT in 29. This year 22. Anyone who says you can not win on the swim, just
does not understand how much swimming helps the ENTIRE race, not just swimming.
Dave, I would love to swim Masters. My work and family schedule just does not jive with the Masters schedule. I work from 6AM - 3PM. Once home it is is family time (except for Tuesdays…track night.)
There is a chance in the future where I can change hours to start at 8AM. If so, I will join masters.
I work in Sacramento. I catch the commute bus at 5:30A. The earlier schedule has benefits. I am off at 3PM and ride home along the Bike Trail (37 miles) three days a week. What I can’t do is stop swimming until March, and then swim for two months off for two months, etc. I will be using cycling and swimming as cross training for my running until the end of the year. I will work on drills without worrying about pace.
You guys are all awesome. This was my first Olympic distance, and only my second Tri, so I fnished just over 2:20, and I know I had 15 in me. I had some fun, I lost a lot of time on the run from cramps, so I know some rest/sleep leading up to the event will help. I have been on a extensive business trips that lead to misbehaviour at night all week leading up to this. All in all, cool race.
My question to the top cyclists, was it too windy/hilly for disc rear? I was trying a solid Zipp for the first time, but right away I noticed some effect due to the wind gusts.
Yep, I know aboutr early. I get up at 4:20, get to the pool at 5:30, get to work at 7, leave at 3 for a run when I get home, or leave at 1 taking some vacation
to go riding 30 miles in the hills on the way home.
I am either on a Kestrel Talon (road bars) or Litespeed Ultimate (aero bars). In the winter I am on a beat up old Giant TFR. I am looking for your fixie.
