Anyone try smuggling CO2 or aerosol flat repair in a bike box or checked luggage? Don’t understand why it’s banned by TSA and airlines but ok to fly with aerosol hairspray, shaving cream etc. ???
All your questions answered here:
But, don’t be that guy who thinks the rules don’t apply to him!
Tried it. Bike got held up in Chicago for 2 days by the TSA.
I know someone that has flown with them in their checked luggage everywhere they have gone. I’m not saying it’s right but the reasons most have for not allowing them on an aircraft are BS
And for the people that think they are going to explode…do you realize that the difference between the earth’s atmosphere and the vacuum of space is only 14.7 psi? A CO2 cartridge is more than capable of handling a change of 15 psi.

The strange thing is under TSA regs you can fly with 2 C02 cartridges in your checked luggage if you have an inflatable life vest that requires C02. Gonna get me some water wings!!! HaHa

i used Tri Bike Transport to ship bike out to IMTX in May. On the way back, forgot to repack cartridges, so stuck them in my checked luggage, inside a shoe, wrapped in paper towels and stuffed inside a sandwich bag. I expected them to be removed, but they were there when I got home. Checked luggage was full of bike stuff (pump, shoes, helmet, etc.), so they may have just decided to let it go. The cold never bothered them anyways…oops. I’ve got kids.
I like to mail the CO2 cartridges to the hotel that I will be staying at.
Caffelatex is easily disguisable if you put it in your toiletries bag. It looks like shaving cream to all but the most trained eyes, who would likely be serious riders that might let it go anyway.
CO2 I’ve decided isn’t worth risking them strip-searching me or holding up my luggage when it’s 99 cents for a new cartridge at the expo, and they know what it is. If it’s a bike box, they’ll look heavily for it and not put your case back together properly, and if it’s in your carry-on, there’s a good chance it’ll show up and then you’ll take an extra 10 minutes in security and be no better than the guy who forgot to remove his belt or dump out his water bottle that holds up everybody else.
I have carried cartridges on six flights and was questioned only once without problem. Twice checked without issue. It works for some and not for others. Depending on the location, it may be best to mail or pay a bike shop to deliver them for a small fee.

I’m surprised they don’t sell these at places where they have triathlons.
