My old trainer just died and I am looking for a new trainer. My circumstances just changed and I have to do most of my training inside on a trainer. Should I spend the big bucks for a computrainer or will a good fluid trainer work? Which will help me improve the most since I am limited to the stupid trainer for most of my workouts?
I would go with a computrainer first. But if you can afford a computrainer what about finding a used fluid trainer also?
Love my computrainer. You can do anything with it. From straight forward stuff, to going online with NA software and ride with others. Worth every penny!

Get a computrainer and then buy a decent fluid trainer for doing group rides in the winter or for when you want to watch a movie without the hassle of calibration, etc.
I never worry about calibrating my CT. I just leave the tension on when I am done. So, I just turn the thing on, put the CT into the coaching sw manual ergo, and just kick up the watts. Guess I am just lazy, but guess this is why I dont have a power meter or HRM either. If Faris can do it without all the gadgits, maybe I have a chance. :o)

You know Faris trains with an SRM, he just doesn’t race with/by it. Given that ambient air temp, tire pressure, etc. all play a noticeable role in the effect of the accuracy of your CT (which is why one should calibrate before every ride), it seems like an awful waste to just leave it. Certainly NOT the best way to “do more with less in training.” Just my $0.02…
definately spring for the Computrainer if you can afford it, the thing is amazing.
Yea, you are right, but I tend to try and do things differently. Again, for anyone serious, things should be done correctly. I am just enjoying being able to do any of this. Got to NOT make this sport another Type A activity in my life.

Take a look at the Tacx Fortius or I-Magic virtual reality trainers. They do everything the computrainer does and more. I’ll be ordering the Foritus and joining the virtual reality racing league as soon as the temps drop below 60 here during the day.
