Florida’s Great Escape Triathlon, sponsored by Lake County, the Central Florida Sports Commission and the National Training Center, will be aired on ABC-affiliate WFTV on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. The race will also be shown on Sunsports, formerly known as the Sunshine Network, on March 8 at 4 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.; March 12 at 4:30 a.m., March 14 at 11 p.m.; and March 18 at 1:30 p.m. Race commentators will be 3-time Olympian Sheila Taormina (1996 Swimming, 2000 Triathlon, 2004 Triathlon) and Florida Sports Magazine Publisher, Dave Ragsdale.
Scheduled for February 27 at Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, Florida’s Great Escape Triathlon is part of the Escape to Alcatraz Triathlon Series that will qualify athletes for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in California in June.
“Last year’s race was extremely successful with 400 athletes competing,” said Tom Ziebart, event director of the National Training Center. “This year we expect at least 600 triathletes to participate, with 48 of them qualifying for the Alcatraz race.”
Florida’s Great Escape Triathlon begins at 8 a.m. with a 1.5-mile swim, followed by an 18-mile bike ride and 8-mile run. Qualifying finishers can look forward to the same distance at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in California.
