Up this morning at 0600 for my long run, and at 0630 its already 83 degrees outside, 79% humidity for a heat index of 91. High for today–94, HI of 107, tomorrow high of 96, HI of 109 (gonna make that long ride interesting). I really hate the south east.
You will not be complaining in February when you are riding in shorts and a short sleeved jersey.
You tell’ em Mike! Just read that the Pcola Beach is opening on Sunday at 6:00 am. Mere Motals will still be at Rodger Scott this Sunday, but hopefully we’ll be back at the beach next week!
I guess it’s just too much to hope for that the road to Navarre is in relatively good shape?
My outdoor unheated pool has a 92F water temperature yesterday. I ended up having to pull my cap off and do a mini-cooldown swim after every set to keep from overheating.
But I just figure it’s the price we pay for 75F and pleasant conditions every Thanksgiving.
In February I’ll be back in Ohio, having spent the summer in Florida courtesy of the US Air Force. I really shouldn’t complain, though…it very easily could have been 130 degrees and Baghdad for the summer.
that was a joke of course. I grew up in Crystal River, FL, and plan on going back upon graduation. I love it there. Yeah, it is hot, but I will take the heat anyday (and the beautiful beaches) over the cold!!
Wait a minute now. Between the awesome seafood, the plethora of greek influence in places like Tarpon Springs, and of course the heavy Cuban influence (and awesome cuisine) toward Southern Florida, I would say that the state is not lacking in diversity and culture.
It is/was very bad today, I agree! I did a 55 mile tempo training ride and watched my HR drift up 10 to 15 beats above normal. Rethinking that 100 mile ride scheduled for tomorrow.
I flew over the road between Navarre and P’Cola beach on Friday. It is in very bad shape. It is going to have to be completely replaced. I would be surprised if the Santa Rosa Triathlon will be held this year. Fort Pickens lost over 100 feet of beach in some areas. The road is in the Gulf in some locations.
Oh yeah, I saw at least 60 sharks yesterday. Some were so close to the shore that they were almost on the beach!
As long as the road is clear to Portofino, they can make Santa Rosa Island work with a shortened (about 8-9 mile) bike course. The first time I did that race in 2002, they had to do that after Hurricane Izzy came through race week, and the National Park Service revoked the permit for their part of the bike course because it was going to take a couple of days to determine the condition of the road underneath the sand.
However, Abitaman at Navarre Beach (one of my favorite sprints in the area) is probably good and thoroughly screwed.
Dang, I love riding that road, but I wonder just how many more times they can justify rebuilding it.

I hope we’re able to have the SRI Tri. Anne deserves some good luck, and I’d be missing my 3rd in a row (Broken wrist in 2003, Hurricane Ivan in 2004).
As for abitaman…
From the abitaman website at http://www.abitaman.com/: Due to the direct hit of Hurricane Dennis on and the recent events in Navarre Beach, the Abitaman Triathlon scheduled for August 21st has been canceled for 2005. With our NO REFUND policy in place, those athletes registered for this event will receive a free entry into any Abitaman Triathlon event for our 2006 racing season. Currently the Navarre Beach Abitaman Triathlon is scheduled for April 9, 2006. We do apologize to each participant and wish the community of Navarre Beach a quick and speedy recovery. Did a 110 mile bike in central oklahoma today where the temperature was 104, the road surface was measured at 124 (the asphalt was melting) and humidity was about 80%. And did i mention wind?
