There is a stretch of road (Hwy 388) that comes up at around 50 miles that is so rough that it beats the heck out of you and your bike! Does anyone know if that has been re-paved for this year?
You haven’t ridden IMWI have you? 1 mile stretch is more closely resembles cobblestones than pavement. I can’t imagine any roads in Florida being that bad. Suck it up!
In all seriousness, I wish the counties that these races are held in would take some of those tax revenues the the race helps brings in and fix more of the worst roads. I really good application of chip seal or overlay would fix it. Hell, you only need to do the 1 lane!
That section is only bad in relation to the rest of the course (which is basically perfect).
It does rattle you some, the only thing that it did to affect my race was that I considered breaking aero to have a little better leverage.
I don’t know if it has been fixed or not. Skipping IMFL for first time in 3 years. Going to miss it for sure.
Never don IMWI… but this goes for almost 10 miles!! (out and back 5 mile stretch)… I hear ya on the tax $$!!!
When I did IMFL back in 2009, I complained, after the race, to a fellow competitor about that section. Her response was that she’d done 3 prior ones and it was like that for all of her prior races there. Glad to hear that it’s 2014 and things have not changed ![]()
It’s not just rough road, it’s a minefield of water bottles, flat kits, sunglasses, etc. Anything that can get shaken loose most certainly will.
The only road I’ve raced on that rivals that section of IMFL is the abandoned Army Depot road on the Musselman course. During the pre-race briefing, the RD, Jeff, tells you “it hasn’t been maintained since the Korean War.” Seemed about right.

This right here! Did IMFL in 2012 and this describes that section of road to a “T”. Good luck and make sure all equipment is attached to your bike securely.
