Florida HIM in May- no wetsuit, trisuit or seperates?

New and need some help with clothing decisions (I can’t believe that phrase just can’t out of my mouth, sounds like something my daughter would say…). Doing the HIM in May in Orlando and since there won’t be a wetsuit likely, trying to decide between seperates or a trisuit. Don’t know how much drag seperates creates, but from what people have said the Desoto Forza sounds like a great short to start with, but noticed the Forza tri-suit has pockets. Helpfull suggestions greatly appreciated.

It will be wet suit legal it always is hahah I did not wear one last year.

none of the above.

OK, kidding. I think most separates won’t influence your performance enough to worry about it. I’d go for comfort.

did you mean to say that FL IM 70.3 is “NEVER” wetsuit legal?

no its always wet suit legal, I personaly think the water is to warm for a full suit.

my understanding is that in the past it has generally been too warm for a wet suit, so wondering if better to use tri-suit or seperates for swim and rest
.

The Florida 70.3 is rarely, if ever, wetsuit legal. I did it a few years ago in separates, putting on my top in T1 (bad idea). With all of the great trisuits (Desoto, 2XU, Orca, etc.) out there now, I would recommend going that route. I’ve talked to Emilio (Desoto) about the pockets on his stuff and he assured me they wouldn’t be an issue during the swim. However, I never tried it.

What?

Are you thinking of the FL IM or the HIM which this thread is about.

the water temperature has been over 80 degrees the past two years at Ford Ironman 70.3 Florida and wet suits have not been allowed at that event.

.

I’m doing the same event, and will always go 2 piece. For me it comes down to easy bathroom visits (if needed), and unless you want to piss on yourself, there doesn’t seem to be anything “fast” about a one piece.

You say that like its a bad thing to pee on yourself in the middle of a race?

Hello,

Wear a zero.3 plus swim skin

and your run/bike kit under.

Any questions?

Be simple
Be fast
Do Not Suck

If you dont mind the inconvenience when you have to use the restroom the why not check out desotos itu style suit? I have a 2xu super elite which is the same style and its fast in the water and comfortable as anything i own for biking and running. If i didnt have the 2xu, and love it, i would try desotos itu suit in a second as everything i own of theirs is fantastic(including their forza low cut shorts). You shouldnt be frequenting the restroom in a half anyways, ideally you shouldnt have to stop(go on the bike) at all.

Obviously a full tri suit is a good option and answer here, but whenever this question comes up, it always points to a gaping and massive hole in the tri apparel options that are out there. Personally I prefer two piece outfits. So if it’s a no-wetsuit swim, I will want to wear my tri shorts for the swim and then put my top on in T1. However, few apparel companies have a full zip, tight fitting, aero top with a couple of pockets. The full zip is absolutly key, as this makes getting the top on in T1 when you are wet very easy -it’s almost impossible to get any kind of pull-over top on in T1, fast, when you are wet.

I know that Cervelo used to have a full zip tri top in their apparel line at one time. It was a very nice race top - best designed one on the market that I have ever seen.

wet suits were allowed at florida 70.3 last year

huh? I raced it the past 2 years and wetsuits were not allowed…

Are you talking about Clearwater or Disney?

I’m going with a tri-short(Desoto Forza) and putting on a full-zip cycling jersey at T1. Although I’m not “racing”, I’m using the race as training. I’ll lose seconds in T1 and on the bike because I won’t be as aero as possible with a normal 3 pocket cycling jersey.

For us traveling to Orlando, does it even make sense to pack the wetsuit as a just in case?

I’ve done every Florida 70.3 race to date, never wetsuit legal UNLESS you are not caring about AG awards/slots.

Don’t waste the time packing the wetsuit. Tom Z. will state the temp the week before the race, but it hasn’t been even close to wetsuit legal the past 3 years!

I think you are incorrect on this, that or 2000 of us decided not to use them.
