Float or no float?

I got some new cycling shoes (finally!) and I’m wondering whether to put red or black look cleats on them.

What do you guys say?

Best to consult an expert on bike fit, particularly with pedal/cleat fitting on this. It’s a critical link with the bike and if you want to maximize power transfer and comfort and minimize risk of injury, then you will want to take this to a real expert.

It’s not a one size fits all situation. Generally the tri community has been huge fans of full float with the huge embracing of the Speedplay pedals. They seem to be the default pedal of choice amongst triathletes. However, I suspect that they are not for everyone.

You choice may change over time as mine has. For years I rode on fixed Look black cleats that were set up with a fitter that used the Fit-Kit pedal system to line things up. Never had any knee problems and rode well. A few years ago I switched to the Look red cleats with some float as this seemed more comfortable to me - again no problems and still riding “well”.

What do pro roadies and ITU guys use? I only race 20k so I don’t need to be comfortable in the saddle for 4-6 hours…

Well I’ve had the black cleats on my looks for about 20 years with no problems, but if you have the choice - I’d go for the float.
