What I thought was creaking from the need of new bearings turned out to be a crack in the rear Flo 30. I have not had an accident on these wheels. Still, I’ve been riding my entire adult life & have ridden equipment to the ground. Never have I experienced something as “catastrophic” as this. The irony is that I always considered the 30’s to be the most bomb-proof wheelset I have ever ridden. (I’m passed the warranty stage.) The issue is this: I ordered those 30’s along w/a set of 60’s alu/carbon. So, I assume they came from the same production batch. If you were me, would you now abandon the 60’s for fear of aluminum cracking?
I really loved those 30’s. Always thought them far more reliable than the newer Aeolus on my roadie.
i wouldnt worry about the same thing happening to the 60’s. Wouldnt matter, same batch or not, totally different wheel and make up.
FWIW yours is the first i have heard of a flo30 cracking, those things are indeed mostly bombproof! Just bad luck more than anything unfortunately.
A - did you contact FLO, and what did they say?
B - what specifically cracked on the rim? Was it the weld, at a spoke hole, random?
C - are there any other trauma marks on that rim near the crack?
I would not attribute problems to an entire brand based on a single failure. It does not look like you have enough information to go beyond a single event. The rims in the 60s are totally different from the aluminum 30 rims, and they could have been manufactured days/weeks/months apart.
I wouldn’t be the least bit worried about your 60’s. I have a set and they are indeed bomb proof. I’d be worried about your busted Flo 30. What did you hit? Obviously, there are always potholes, railroad tracks and road debris that can damage a wheel. Did you follow proper inflation on their bar graph? I just don’t understand how a wheel develops a stress crack without some type of acute stress on the wheel.

Thanks for your comment. I’m in DC & used them primarily for work commutes, i.e., dedicated smooth bike path. Again, zero accidents. And yeah, followed proper inflation on EVERY ride. Who knows… I’m so first-world-problem depressed. And I’ve been fixing to purchase a set of their full carbon wheelset

This is a type of situation where a picture speaks volumes. Also, +1 for not thinking twice about riding your 60’s. FWIW, I’ve had 30’s, 3x 60’s, 90’s, and 2x discs starting from round 2 with zero issue aside from needing truing.

Thanks. That’s just it… the wheels never needed to be trued. ALWAYS straight which suggests to me that they were good-to-go until this.
What a bummer! You’re taking it well calling it a first world problem. While it’s not as expensive as replacing a Zipp, it’s still not cheap and unexpected. That’s very nice of you. My Yeoleo 60mm front wheel cracked after I hit a small rock. It was a week after their 1-year warranty ran out. They offered me some discount for the rim, so I bought it and used the original hub to rebuild.
Same reason I looked at this post. And the only reason I replied was to see if they might give a hint of when those gravel wheels are dropping. I see recent blog posts talking about them.
