Time for a flat screen TV, and I need a bit of a primer.
Don’t want huge. Something in the 40 inch range.
The thing that we watch the most is sports events and games, and the occasional movie.
Want to mount it on a wall - what do I need to know about that?
Thanks.
go to best buy / walmart . whomever. buy whatever flat screen looks nice and fits your budget. We have a samsung (maybe a 50, got it for free from my grandparents when they sold their condo). a 40" is fairly cheap nowadays, I have a Best Buy flyer in front of me, they recently had a 42" LG for $430. Hit the boxing day sales, and you might get something even less expensive.
buy the wall mount kit at the same time. just think about where you’ll be sitting when you watch TV to figure out if you need a tilt or swivel. for a 40" I think the wall mount is fairly inexpensive, under $100 for a flat mount last I looked.
figure out cable management. That’s the big thing, you don’t want it to look like shit. Depending on the room layout, you may need to have an electrician / drywaller install a junction box and outlet behind the TV.
If your a costco member I recommend them free extended warranty so its 2 yrs then amex adds a year so your at 3yr then for really cheap they sell the extended warranty another 3 yrs for like $30.
Wall mount, figure out your cabling. plus wall mount brackets not cheap.
I’ll add my 2 cents. If you are looking to stream content, you should compare the price of the smart TV vs. a regular TV and another device to stream your content. I recently bought a 40" Samsung and it was cheaper to buy the TV and a smart blue ray player than buying the equivalent smart TV. If you have a gaming system you can probably stream your content from that.
i have a magnavox that size that is mounted on the wall. got a hell of a deal on it. the mount i got doesnt sit flush on the wall but it is on an articulated arm. it can point in any direction and i can see it from anywhere (if i turn it all the way i can even see it from the bathroom which is awesome. me and the ms can watch a movie from the jacuzzi tub.
thats my advice, articulated arm and a big tub with jets.
As soon as you mount a 40" flat screen… you’ll want it bigger. Believe me.
Look at:
50"-55"
Backlit LED and not Edgelit LED
Smart TV as previously recommended
5.1 Soundbar
My own personal preference: I hate TVs mounted high on a wall so when you are on a sofa or in a chair you have to look-up to view it. A TV should be viewed at eye level which means at sitting eye level. And please don’t mount it above a fireplace. grrrrr!
You might want to consider a bit larger tv. Depends how far away you will be sitting. 40 sounds decent, but really a 50 would probably be better. I bought a 55, wish it was a 60. I second Costco. Great deals and great warranty. I also bought a blu ray player that streams, and it was cheaper that way too (as someone else mentioned).

Good point
Yes regarding the mounting location - will be at eye-level when seated.
It’s a lower ceiling room in our basement, and the main seating area will be quite close to the wall. I’ve visually looked at how a 40 - 42 in unite will look on the wall with a tape measure and some tape, and that seems to be about the right size for that wall, and where we will be sitting.
I have a 46" wall mounted tv, and sit about 10’ away. It works just fine. I wouldn’t want any smaller though.
Buy a thin tv. Buy a shallow mount. You don’t want the front of the tv sticking out 5 -6" from the wall.
Be sure the mount is screwed into the wall studs. I think I bought my own, longer, lag screws and pre-drilled holes when I put mine up. I can’t imagine how pissed I’d be if a new tv fell off the wall…
You can get away with drywall anchors just fine. I hung up a buddys tv last weekend for him. 65 inch with drywall anchors. The thing is incredibly solid on the wall.

You can do that, if you use really good anchors, but why would you when the studs are right there?

When they dont line up with where you want the tv. Which is what happened.

So, then the tv wall mount wasn’t adjustable side to side??? Really?
Fleck, get one that at least adjusts (slides) side to side.

Yes it was, just had to be slid over far enough that we werent comfortable with how far to one side it was. The anchors were plenty strong enough for the drywall and we went that route.
The last wall mount I had could accommodate any stud/tv alignment issue, between adjustability of the plate itself and the positioning of the rails on the wall plate. There would never be a need for anchors.
Go to deal news or slick deals for the best current TV deals. 40 inch Sony lcd smart TV is, for example $370 shipped free today. Go to monoprice.Com for hdMI cables and wall mounts. You will be shocked how inexpensive they are. Decent mounts for $20, cables less than $5.
