Well, it happened. I was using a racing wheel the other day on a training ride and had a blowout on the rear. There goes about $80 for the tire. I cut it off with the razor blade…ripped it off the rim…stretched a new tire on and away I went.
I was using Tufo Extreme Tape. The “white” half of the tape stays on the tire and the “clear” part of the tape stays on the rim when you pull the flat off. The “clear” tape was very tacky and was far more then needed to mount a spare!
I’ll be using the Extreme Tape for sure!! The change was a fast and very easy. I was using an unstretched and unglued spare (Conti Podium).
I didn’t have a flat but was just putting some new rubber on my wheel. I also had the extreme tape. Since I wanted to keep the old tire for a spare I didn’t cut the tire off, rather “muscled” it off the rim. What a work out that was. Doing it this way also pulled a lt of the clear tape from the rim. That made me worry if enough would be retained to keep the new tire secure if I had to change it during a race. I do carry a razor blade during races to cut and peel the tire. I wonder if the cut and peel method will always leave a good amount of tape on the rim. I know rolling the old tire off the rim removes a bunch of the tape. Anyone else have experience with the cut and peel method?
