Fixies?

Can someone tell me what the fascination is with fixed gear bikes? Recently, I was in NYC on business and the friggen things are like a plague.

Its the purest type of cycling , some have no clips or brakes . The direct drive uses your legs for braking also builds a great pedal stroke / high cadence skills . Road warriors just hold the leg straight and skid to a stop . Ultra low maintenance , you can build one out of junk for $100- $300 .

Hipsters … which is all the reason any sane and rational person should need to dislike them.

I’ve had one since 1990, and currently have 2. They are fun to ride. Nothing more. I have found that in my 20 mile commute home I am about 5 min slower with my fixie. I am about the un-hippest person out there. My wife will back me up on this.

They are a hell of a workout iif you have any hills where you ride. If you have too easy a gear you spin out on the flats and descents, too big a gear and you die on the climbs. Wait until you forget that you can’t coast while getting your water bottle out and the bottle goes flying when your knee hits it. Great for working on your pedaling efficiency.

So you love your un-pure brake and clips ride , free wheeling setup with a poor pedal stroke .Ultra high maintenance over priced flashy bike .
