The people…fellow athletes, volunteers at races, etc. There is such a sense of camaraderie at races…there is always somebody to cheer you on or encourage you in some way.
The fact that I have three sports to choose from…I can always figure out a way to get in a workout and make myself better in at least one discipline.
The stuff…I gotta admit, I’m a gear junkie. Sometimes all I need is a new pair of goggles to get my fix, sometimes its a new bike.
Lots of races to choose from, and the variety…sprint, Oly, HIM, IM…its all good.
The lifestyle…triathlon makes me have a focus and goals with which to orient my training, and also to impose some discipline on my working out.
Thanks for putting a positive spin on this idea Herbert.
The people: never have I met so many out going and kind people willing to go the extra mile for a stranger. It really is a beautiful community that we have. So friendly.
The sports: three to choose from as well as weights and stretching… get bored with one… switch around
The races: great locations and great chances to meet (live) the great people that meet (online) here.
Allows me to get my “fix”
I can eat like a pig and still look and feel great
(these may be repeats as i have yet to read the thread)
I'm not trying to hijack your post... but Is you on the triathlete mag of this month riding a litespeed ?

Like everyone else said … people. I had serious doubts about said “Triathlon Community” based on how we bicker and seemingly “rank the value” of fellow athletes here, on the internet. But at the races, the fellow triathletes and volunteers are just awesome.
The Challenge … it’s just hard. Plain, simple, old fashioned hard. You simply can’t fake the funk. You can’t buy a good finishing time. You get what you deserve in triathlon.
The Dedication – Compare the lifestyle of triathlon to other involved hobbies, and there is no comparison. You have to have discipline in how you plan, eat, sleep, recover, etc. The greater the investment, the greater the value.
The Variety – you really do have the be pretty darn good at each event. Each one presents its own challenge and respect.
The Emotion … whether it’s self-doubt, being in the groove, setting a PR, struggling, kicking butt, gaining confidence, runner’s high, or whatever … you always feel something in this sport/training. You rarely go through a workout or a race and have “no feeling” about what you are doing or just did. There’s too much invested to be apathetic about any of it.
Herbert … way to number your entries. “FIVE things I love about Triathlon”. 1-2-2-3-4. Awesome.
Oops, I was going to add 5) Age numbers on the calfs help identify date perfect people

Well, maybe add a big A or U for available or unavailable!
I like your original list, especially the people and the travel. I’d also add those few minutes when you are in the water waiting for the start and looking back on shore at the crowd.
