Fitting problems with Kestrel Talon SL

So, I’ve got this nice Talon SL set up as a tri-specific bike (I know, I know, the bike isn’t really designed to be a tri-specific bike). However, I’ve been working with the fit all winter and I’ve got it set up to be very comfortable in what I would consider a good triathlon position.

I’m six-foot tall, 145 lbs, with about a 33 inch inseam. The bike is a 55cm with a 8.5cm stem, and has Syntace C2 aerobars. In order to achieve the comfortable and aero position I mentioned earlier, I have had to move the saddle all the way forward, and install a Profile fast-forward seat post. This puzzles me because I would have thought that given my physiology, the 55cm frame should have been a little on the small size. I also worry about my weight distribution on the frame and the handling problems that might occur with this setup. Should I have bought a more triathlon specific frame? Is there a way to ‘fix’ the Talon?

Hmmmm, Well, there isn’t anything to “fix” on the Talon SL. You may (as you pointed out) just be on the wrong bike. Tough to tell over the internet.

You have some valid concerns though. First off, the names of the sizes don’t mean much. Every company measure differently which results in very different size names. One campny’s 49cm can have the same, identical or nearly identical dimensions to another company’s 55cm. There is no “standard” for measuring frame size.

The Talon is at its best, in my opinion, for someone who does sit very relaxed, especially a medium to tall athlete (5’10-6’2"). Outside of that range the bike gets a bit compromisey.

Based on the little information we have to work with I would suggest your suspicion that you need a tri geometry frame may be accurate. I would consult a good fitter (my standard line) and take their advice.

Good luck with that. Let us know how it works out!

That’s what I was afraid of. By the way, the Talon is 55cm center to center. Another thing I forgot to mention is that when I’m out of the saddle for a climb, my knees will contact the arm pads of the aero-bars.

Uh oh, not good. You need to go see the bike fitter man(girl).

This is why I ride my Talon set up in a sorta-forward road position. The handling got too squirrelly for me when I got far enough forward. It’s a great, comfortable road bike, though…it’s my workhorse. PS, I don’t have the SL.

I agree, it’s a great bike. I’ve got a Seven Axiom as my everyday road bike. I might just sell the Talon and get a more tri-specific frame. I made a call today and one of the local bike shops has a 55cm P3 with 10sp Dura Ace. I might have to go that way…

I’ll bet you won’t regret it.
