FISTapalooza - RSVP on the poll

We’ve temporarily turned our poll (on the right hand side of the forum table) onto an RSVP for FISTapalooza. Some of you will just be coming for the day, Sat or Sun (March 21/22). Some will be camping overnight, some will be staying at Monty’s B&B next door. Please check appropriate box so we know how much coffee, pastries, muffins, tri tip BBQ, etc., we’ll need.

No charge to camp, and i’m going to try to get my hot/cold water outdoor showers up and going by then.

WHERE
FISTapalooza is going to take place at the Slowtwitch home, a 13-acre plot that sits 4200’ above sea level, above a flat plain of desert that stretches toward Death Valley, and adjacent to mountains that reach 9000’ and 10,000’ in elevation.

You’ll either rent a room from “Monty” at his bed and breakfast, and stay where the attendees of our F.I.S.T. tri bike workshops stay as they learn how to fit you aboard your bikes. Or, you’ll bring your tents and your sleeping bags and, if you do, there is no charge to sleep on the property (this is how the tri club members often do it when they come as a group to train).

What it looks like here:

Ther are some photos and pages online that’ll give you a glimpse of the area:

“Home” from Slowman’s camera

We’re about an hour driving from Burbank and Pasadena, or from the Inland Empire: two hours from Santa Barbara, San Clemente, or San Marcos and Vista; and we’re about 4 to 5 hours from the San Francisco Bay area.

WHAT
Athletes come here from time to time to train, either individually or in groups. This weekend is just for that, with rides and runs from the property on the roads that brought us here; or on the trails that also brought us here. There is a special emphasis, tho, on how you fit aboard your bike. Several fitters will be here, as well as several fitting stations. If you choose to avail yourself of it, a fit appointment will cost you $200. In attendence for your fit will be me (slowman), John Cobb, Jordan Rapp, and others.

WHO
I’ll be here (slowman) as will John Cobb, Paul Swift, and pro athletes Jordan Rapp, Jonas Colting and Bjorn Andersson, who’ll just be here for the training. Except Jordan, as a F.I.S.T. instructor, will also aid with the fits. I’m not sure with precision who else will be in attendance; whomever it is, you’ll meet them when you’re here

WHEN
March 21/22, that’s a Saturday/Sunday. You may arrive Saturday any time, or Friday evening if it suits you. But we will only be BBQing Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

BIKE FIT SESSIONS
Fits will commence at 9AM and run through 4PM, 2hr per fit session. Apply in advance for an appointment.

SCHEDULED RIDES AND RUNS
Though bike fits will be going on all day, we can only fit one or two at a time. The rest of you will be riding and running, if that’s what suits you. We’ll provide muffins, pastries and coffee, bring your camp stove and vittles if you want something more substantial in the morning. We’ll ride at 10AM, and we’ll run a 2PM. But you can ride or run in smaller groups, or on your own, as you so choose.

FOOD
Best to bring your own if you want to make sure you have enough, we’ll provide the “continental” breakfast described above no-charge, and then we’ll be BBQing all afternoon, starting about 3PM and going until 5PM or so. If you choose to partake of the BBQ, bring $25, and that’s per day that you partake.

Dan, I’m scheduled for a 9AM fit session on Saturday, but now that I see the group ride is at 10AM I’d like to reschedule for 3PM. How do I do this? Thanks.

Fred

the 10am Saturday group ride, is that going to go up the climb? Or is it going to be something tame? I’d prefer to climb up to Angels Crest.

i’ll tell you what i’d like: that you just be the ride leader. you can take us wherever you want us to go.

my choice would be to ride up to the top, intersection of Big Pines Hwy and Hwy 2, then turn around come back down to Mile High and stop at the Cafe for late breakfast, then finish the ride. Then those that want to go longer can add a loop down at the bottom on the return.

you might want to consider an option, to ride down to wrightwood, eat breakfast there, then return. 35 mile round tripper. a hard 35, but, that’s the total mileage. much better breakfast at THAT restaurant (a big log-cabiny-type place with a great breakfast) than the restaurant at mile high, which changed hands and is not so red hot any longer.

sounds like a good option to me. You know it’s all about the breakfast.

Are you anticipating a broad enough range of folks that those of us on the weak side of “middle of the pack” will have groups to head out with. I hope to come either way, but I am curious about whether I should plan on riding alone.

Also, what is the closest town (for MapQuest purposes)? I am trying to figure out various route and itenerary options to work this into a Southwest road trip.

Thanks so much for putting something like this together.

“Also, what is the closest town (for MapQuest purposes)? I am trying to figure out various route and itenerary options to work this into a Southwest road trip.”

i am going to be the lanterne rouge, so we’ll ride together.

we’re in valyermo. you can mapquest that. just don’t rely on mapquest for directions. over the next few days i’ll be posting more info, including best driving directions.

I’m not sure if I can think of a name for a weekend gathering of a bunch of men in the woods that is easier to crack a joke about than FISTapalooza…yet nothing. This is quite a collection of mature individuals.

Just drove by Vaylermo this morning at 2am when coming back from TriFest in Tucson due to GPS issues!
Very nice area Dan and unusually cold! I thought that Bike Fit Systems was going to come down as well for this to help/assist in bike fits; are they not?

If I didn’t live on the east coast I would so be there. How bout one on the east coast next year?

Do we have to RSVP for this event somewhere?

I plan to attend by myself

Haha, that is a visual I didn’t quite want : )
.

“Do we have to RSVP for this event somewhere?”

it is not necessary that you do, but it would be VERY convenient if those of you who are coming would email me and just say “i’m coming;” so that we can make sure we’ll be prepared.

Just be thankful it’s not taking place on Uranus. Or…

Do you have room for a 32’ RV?

And as long as you have water, I have an outdoor shower people could use. I also love to cook so I could whip up a ton of BBQ and then a few vegan meals.

“Do you have room for a 32’ RV?”

not only do i have room, i have a full hookup

i have a 30amp RV plug on my property adjacent to an RV space, and i have a black water dump. unfortunately they’re not in the same location, but you can dump just prior to leaving if you’d like. let me know if you’re coming, because i have room for one of these big boys, so if you take it, fine, but then that’s taken.

Dan,

In Japan at the moment…needed much sushi, sake, and Japanese beer to reward myself for Marine Iraqi combat tour complete. I double-downed an email RSVP to your email heads up for the FISTapalooza. Any room in Monty’s B&B left? If not, I reckon I’ll ‘truck-rough it’ for Sat and Sun. Looking forward to the weekend regardless.
