FISTapalooza question

Will we be on the FIST bike or will we be fit on our existing bike?

There is no such thing, in Dan & my opinion, as fitting someone on your existing bike. A fit is executed on a fit bike, and as such, all FISTapalooza fits will be done on fitbikes.

That makes sense, but ultimately you have to transfer the fit dimensions to a real bike. Will someone be able to help setup my existing bike per my FIST fit?

Yes. I would also say that unless the person who is charging you money can do that transfer, they aren’t a qualified fitter.

A fitter ought to have a few basic tools

  1. he ought to execute fits aboard a fit simulator - a “fitbike” - such as an EXIT, Serotta, Waterford, Argon18, etc.
  2. he ought to have a wide selection of saddles & aerobars (for tri) for you to choose from. Pedals are recommended, but not as essential, since many people have unique setups to their pedals and I encourage people to bring their own pedals, since they are bringing their own shoes.
  3. he ought to have a measuring device for body angles - at the very least a goniometer, but a Retul (motion-capture) or Dartfish (video capture) is also useful

A fitter ought to have a few basic skills

  1. the ability to tell you what stock bikes will work with your position, and the ability to do some basic math to accommodate margins off the fit that is required to do this (i.e., what does a 10.5cm stem do if used instead of a 10cm stem OR conversely, if a bike has 5mm less stack that your fitted position, will that work and how do you make it work?).
  2. the ability to set-up a bike in the position he reached with you on the simulator
  3. the ability to know whether or not your existing bike can be retrofitted safely (i.e., no 16cm stems) to work with the position he’s just found

That’d be my definition of a fitter. Someone who meets those criteria. Beyond that, their skills as a fitter may be quite variable, but if they don’t have the tools and some basic skills, they aren’t even really in the game.

Thanks
