Fistapalooza '09 PICS from 3/21!

Well, a huge “THANK YOU” to Dan and Tanya, and Monty for putting on what for me was a great training day, and for some was a rare chance to get fit by the best in the biz! Dan (Slowman), Rappstar (Jordan Rapp) and John Cobb were all there taking fit sessions with people. If you’ve ever needed a fit and you didn’t make it out today, you missed out. I and several others were simply there for a training day. For me, it was a real treat to train on different roads and terrain than my typical day-to-day routes which can get monotonous, and since I ALWAYS train alone, by choice, it was nice to train with other like-minded folks and it definitely helped pass the time on the ride and run to hang with that crew!
After some pastries, we finally got going around 10:30am and Rappstar and MikePlumb led two different groups. Most of us went with Jordan and did a 12-mile warmup loop around the Valyermo area. Very few cars on the roads and some beautiful desert scenery, and great company with all you guys. Then, we began…THE CLIMB. This is the one that Bjorn holds the record for apparently. Somewhere between 40 and 45 minutes they say, and it’s nearly 3,000 feet up in under 12 miles. I have never done a climb that long and was up for it, as we all were. I think it took me about 1:15 or so and I was beat at the top. Felt great to get a good workout like that. Jordan was descending as I continued to climb, chasing Bjorn Andersson who was flying downhill and I quickly asked Jordan how much further to the top. His response? “A ways!”. Shit! I pressed on. We were all spread out and I never really saw anyone else until we regrouped at the top.
A few of the guys pressed on for more climbing (masochists), but with a 1/2 IM next weekend, I am in taper mode, so I opted to descend with about 5 others. We bundled up at the top and had a fantastic 20-25 minute glide back down. At the bottom, it was about 70 degrees, so my gloves and fleece were a bit much once we got to the bottom, but we made it back to Xantusia a few minutes later and I grabbed a snack from the car.
It took a little while to organize a run, but four of us set out on a dirt road just down from the ST Compound. Legs were surprisingly stiff from that climb! I can see why this place is so great to train- elevation, empty roads, great climbs, trails, etc. Oh, and if you like dogs, the place is like Cesar Millan’s wet dream. About 5 or 6 dogs roaming the grounds all very friendly, and a few horses too! But the coup d gras (did I spell that correctly?) was Monty’s epic BBQ. We gorged ourselves on salad, chips and salsa, pasta, tri tip, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, cake, etc. Damn, that was good. Monty, you rock the grill like no other, and thanks for the chicken recipe!
So, below are some photos of the day, and if any of you get a chance to visit up there, it will be worth your while!

The crew ready for our morning bike ride. The weather was perfect. In the pic, are Mikedonia, Kylie, Sailnfast, Longboarder, MikePlumb, Rappstar, Robert (can’t remember your screen name…sorry), Mike’s friend Vicki, and a couple others who’s names escape me:

After our 12-mile warmup loop, the climbing begins right here:

It’s over 11 miles and nearly 3K feet of climbing. Here I am near the bottom, still feeling full of energy:

Jackson Lake was beautiful with people fishing and snow right down to the water. About 6,200 feet I think, and I’m getting tired:

Happy because I’m finally at the top, with Mountain High Ski Area in the background. Temp was a good 20 degrees cooler at the top at 7K feet:

I hate taking pics of myself with my cell phone camera. I’m always tilting my head back to fit in the picture!

Fun!!

You should go run at Jackson Lake. And then have Jonas tell you that Bjorn saw a bear there. It will make you run fast!

clm

Ha, ha. Next time! I’m back home already.

Is that Rapp in the Polka Dot Jersey. Show off!!

That’s kinda rubbing it in when taking folks out for a training ride!! LOL

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, thanks to the crew at the compound. I had a really fun day. I did not leave till after 9PM. I went back for more of Mark’s killer BBQ…so much for my race wt for Oside:).

In the evening Jordan, Dan, John, and Tanya settled down for BBQ with us. It was nice since they had time to relax. The conversation went from tri stuff to religion.

As for the “WARM UP RIDE” my HR was the same as the climb.

It was great to see old friends and make some new ones.

Again. thanks guys it was a fun day.

Ah, I would have enjoyed that! Wanted to get home in time to tuck the kids into bed though, which I did. Glad you made it up there Bob! See you next week!

good pics.

but the problem with a bunch of them: there was someone’s big head in foreground!

:^)

great meeting you jay! wish you could’ve stayed longer, the discussion around dinner time got, ahem, lively

safe training!

Great recap and photos Jay! It was great seeing you again and good luck next weekend!

I’m stoked about my new fit (9cm of increased drop and I still feel very comfortable!!). Nothing like having Dan and John Cobb fuss over you for 2-hrs as they dial-in every aspect of your position. I feel very fortunate that I only need a new stem (and possibly seat post) and not a new bike altogether like some folks! Thanks Dan, John, and Jordan!

Jeff and I stuck around until about 8:30pm after gorging ourselves at Monty’s BBQ while listening to him and Dan tell stories about the early days of QR, racing at the inaugural WF, and open water swim strategy…very cool.

After 55 hilly miles on the bike + a 6-mile brick run yesterday, we continued our training weekend with a 12.5 mile run in PV this morning. Needless to say, I’m beat!

Jeez, a good weekend for you Fred! I, on the other hand, woke up and made pancakes and bacon for the family, then went to the mall and had a slice of Sbarro pizza and a Coke. Ha, ha.

The polka dot jersey was very appropriate! As a joke I thought I would try to stay on his wheel for the first mile or so…I don’t think I lasted a quarter mile. While on his wheel with him pushing the headwind I was sitting at over 300W! A couple turns after dropping off his wheel he was completely out of site.

I will put up some pics from the ride later today or tomorrow.

Nice host! He drops the guests, and rides out of site in the first mile!! :^)

It was very impressive and demonstrated that these guys are at a completely different level of strength and fitness than us AG’ers!

To be fair he did take us on an 8 mile warm up loop before we regrouped to start the climb. Once we started the climb it was everyone for themselves.

They were great hosts, Kylie and I wish we could have stayed longer but we had to get back home after the ride due to some work meetings.

another fun weekend at Dan’s and of course thanks to the hosts, Dan, Tanya and Monty.
Always a good time hanging with John Cobb and Vikki was thrilled to get a bike fit done by John. We spent this afternoon transferring the measurements to her Felt DA.

The ride up the mountain was fun on Saturday, three of us opted to just hit the climb and forgo the extra warm up miles. My ride up while still not real impressive compared to the big dogs (Jordan and Bjorn) was my best time un that climb, a 58 something. I know I still have a couple minutes I could easily shave off if I had of done it starting with the group. After the climb, Vikki and I rode down into Wrightwood, through town and just about back out the east side to the highway before turning around to come back to town for lunch at Grizzlies.

I didn’t get many pictures, forgot to take the camera of the pocket for most of the ride, but here are the few I did take.

Yea, a good way to finish a great day(I will be applying the swim strategy).

It was good to meet you and Jeff. See you at Oside.

Mike, it was great to see you and Vikki… fun day.

See you at Oside and thanks for posting the pics.

Likewise Bob! See you in two weeks!

Fred
I also ran 6mi at 1PM. WINDY! There was some kite surfers taking wind readings 25-35+mph…that’s going to drop the water temp(:
