After about 7 months of serious cycling i have just suffered my first crash. Yesturday around 11:45am going down the backside of Decker Cyn rd into Hidden Valley(california), making a sharp left turn, i lost control on a steep part of the accent. back wheel went out and i slid on my left side for a while before coming to a stop in the middle of the street. immediate stinging pain throughout my body, i dragged myself and my bike out of the street and sat on the side extremely dazed and scared. after a quick look at the bike(worn down pedal, torn bar tape, bent in shifter, no other real damage cept the front wheel might be fukt, bike shop is looking at it as we speak for anything else) i noticed how shredded i am. left hand looks like it went through a meat grinder, chin needed 4 stitches, right hand cut and severely sprained/sore. the road rash on my left hip is frickin disgusting, and my left shoulder has quite a doozy too. worst pain at the time though was the feeling like i had been given a massive dead leg to my left calf. i could barely walk. very shortly after i went down a fellow cyclist stopped and gave me a lot of help. he walked me and my bike to a safer spot to sit, looked me over for anything really bad, asked me a few questions to see if i was coherent and most importantly checked over my bike. he helped me down the rest of the hill where i was able to call for help. a lot of cyclists stopped as they passed to make sure i was ok, it was an awesome thing to see. ANYWAYS i could go on with the details from the rest of the day but ill spare making this story more dull. all in all im fine and i just wanted to say how many nice people there were out on the road that day and i want to thank them.
Make sure to scrub your road rash with lots of hot water and soap. Just let the shower run on it for a good few minutes.
yeah i took a nice long salt bath, scrubbed and soaped, then peroxide and re-rinsed in the bath. everthing is very cleaned out. second skin applied and im on the road to recovery
You’re a brave man scrubbing that out yourself. After my last serious crash I went to the emergency room to have that mess cleaned out after a good dose of anesthetic. The nurse was this gay Philippino dude who was having a fit over my “exposed buttocks”. I was like “dude, just cut off my bike shorts, scrub that whole thing out and we can both get past this.”
The wounds heal super fast once they’re properly cleaned out. It sounds like you’re well on your way to getting back on it.
It is painful but it helps prevent the infection that is possible. Good job for toughing it out.
The scabs are full of vitamins and a good afternoon snack too. HAHAHAHA. Hope you feel better and the bikes alright.
I see lots of ST surfing in the near future.
Good luck healing. I am glad to hear you were not hurt more.
I heard a good quote at a race a while back. “As I get older, my goals are to climb faster and descend slower”. I think about that more now that I have a child.
t
ha i love that quote. thanks
Yeah, i had a friend go over the bars coming down decker to westlake, not pretty. glad you’re o.k. or there abouts. It’s a fun hill until you have to pay the piper. He doens’t even know what happpened. I would suspect it was a small rock that threw the front tire out from under him.
The new wisdom is don’t use peroxide. It kills the good stuff as much as the bad stuff.
Damn Nick! Sorry to hear about the wreck! Take it easy out there! You’ll be fine in time for New Orleans! Just take care of those cuts buddy!
