I’m swimming my first swim meet ever tomorrow. I picked up swimming at age 25 and prefer open water marathons, but decided to try some short stuff this weekend with a few teammates. I’m swimming the 100 IM, 100 Free and hopefully a couple relays. Wish me luck! P.S. I do flip turns.
Have a good time, after you watch the first event all the heats and everyone trying to get their correct spot and so forth. You’ll quickly realize that there is nothing to worry about. Just relax and have a good time.
Oh, when they open up a sprint lane for warmup, be sure and do a few block starts to make sure yoru goggles won’t come off!
100IM is pretty much the coolest event there is. Enjoy.
Good luck!
I have been invited to do a swim meet in the next month I think. I am already scared sh*!less, as I am just getting comfortable swimming with my masters team.
Today we did 3x200 Fly and I nearly drowned, but I did love it.
Don’t hold back, and go all out on those hundreds. No time to think about form. Muscle memory is a great thing.
Just don’t do flip turns on the IM, will get you DQed. Other than that, good luck, have fun, and be nice to the officials.
I’ve found I can more or less go all out on the 100 IM. Going all out on the 100 Free leaves me paralyzed on the 4th length.
Good luck, have fun, and stay warm!

Pacing 100 free or 100 fly is trickey, you need to go “fast-easy” on the 1st 25. Trying to “muscle-it” for 100 metres will have you sinking by the end. Makes me want to do a lactate tolerance set …
I have found that the simple act of thinking of holding good technique the first 25 of a 100 or 50 of a 200 saves a tremendous about of energy while sacrificing little in speed…again, in my experience only.
:36 on the 50 breast.
1:17 on the 100 I’M
1:10 on 100 Free
30 on 50 Free
