First Sufferfest ride

I have a Computrainer and typically I ride some course with it or if I want an FTP test I ride a perfectly flat course I’ve created.

Last spring / summer I bought a Sufferfest video (Angels) to try out, thinking I could link it to the Ct so that the resistance in the CT would change based upon the Sufferfest video. But, I never got around to it.

Since I broke my CT and it is in for repair, I'm on my old Cyclops Fluid Trainer. So last night thought I'd play the Sufferfest Video.

Problem is, my training plan has me holding Z3 for an hour ride. And while the resistance stays the same, when watching the video I’d be riding along, Contador rides by and the video says to go harder - I do. Let’s just say it is real hard to ride up Alp D’Huez and keep your HR down.

If I had done what the video said and did that much cycling at an RPE of 8/10 to 9/10 I would have puked, if I was able to puke.

Anyway, it was a fun ride and I found myself talking (yelling may be closer) at riders, either trash talking or just telling them to slow down.

I may look for a video other than Angels though. While I like climbing, that’s a LOT of climbing. Plus, one in get my CT back it’ll be nice to sync them and try that out.

I am a fan of the Sufferfest videos. I think there is a tremendous amount of value unlocked by pairing them with trainerroad.com. I am not really good at RPE and pacing, but trainer road handles that aspect for you and give appropriate power targets synced with the videos. The recent “Tour of Sufferlandria” was a fun way to do trainer workouts. Definitely makes the time go by fast! For a video suggestion more “tri” like in riding style, try “The Wretched”.

Agree. TrainerRoad and Sufferfest together are a great combo. One thing, though…TrainerRoad does not include attacks or other really hard efforts. Before I purchased the Sufferfest videos, I tried some of the TrainerRoad Sufferfest workouts and finished them in somewhat decent form…Add the video and you finish slumped over your handlebars, gasping for breath.

Welcome to Sufferlandria!! I just got off the trainer doing Angels too. That’s a good video, not the hardest believe it or not. You may have figured this out, but most people use their RPE scale with 7 as FTP, 8 as VO2, 9 as anaerobic threshold, 10 as all out (duh.) I find if I use those numbers they are hard but doable, and I’m left with a great workout

Do the workout. Angels, The Hunted, and Hell Hath No Fury are excellent workouts for triathletes. Some of the others would better be suited towards ITU racers or bike racers.

A couple of them will actually having you begging for the end of the interval (Downward Spiral, Fight Club, Revolver).

Especially if you have a power meter to keep you honest…

If your workout is to ride Z3 for an hour, watch an action film (Die Hard 4). Keep an eye on the watts.

I love Angels, The Hunted, and ISLAGIATT. I have never finished revolver. I usually get off halfway through and make a stiff drink. That one sucks!

I just did this one the other day. Now, previous to doing this video I found sufferfest to be hard, but I would finish the hour feeling good. Tired, beat, but in good spirits. After **ISLAGIATT, **I was completely shelled. Disorientated, blood shot eyes, and in need of an immediate 3 hour nap. It was very much the same feeling I have when I get home from a group ride with a group that is way too fast and going way too long for me, and where I’m just hanging on for dear life.

I’m hooked!
