40 degrees here in ND…perfect day for the first ride or the year. The trainer was getting sickening…it was sandy and wet as shit out (took a while to clean her after the ride), but it was fuckin sweet being outside. Tooled around for maybe ten miles and almost slid out as I was powering down a hill. The looks on peoples faces was priceless as I passed em on my bike…I can’t wait for it to warm up even more. Okay off to the pool now…take care all and for all you lucky ducks down south I resent you and the sweet ass riding weather you are blessed with year round…especially you Lazy Ben!!! Later peeps
You got to be kidding me? First time outside? I haven’t even had my first time “inside” since…oh, about 2 years? It was 78, totally 100% clear skies today. By Friday the highs will hit in the 80’s.
This is one of the reasons I’ve moved from NY to VA to FL and now in AZ.
40 degrees is warm? Did your testicles unretract yet?
It’s 70ish and sunny here today, now that’s outdoors riding weather ![]()
If you live in ND, you have to get some heavy winter clothing and accessories. I rode through the winter here in NJ, I was out in 14 degree weather with the wind chill in the single digits and had a great time. Its never too cold to ride, you just don’t have the right gear ![]()
We’re not all blessed with your weather Paul, but I am sure am jealous!!!

My balls are too huge to retract…like I said damn you and your nice weather Ben!!! I can’t wait til it’s 70 degrees and I’m sweatin balls on a nice 100mile ride…until then I gotta layer up…no speedos for a while.
haha. There is a huge difference between North Dakota and New Jersey. The single digit wind chills that you speak of in NJ would be a high if your lucky on a good day in ND. I know it was 37 below on Friday in Northern Minnesota and Eastern ND usually has similar temps to Northern MN. I had my first outdoor ride today too. (other than riding in Key West over the Weekend)
Had my first ride outside yesterday in a long time (November?). What made it better - it was on my road bike which I spent last summer stripping, repainting, then rebuilding just how I wanted it. I was psyched at the outcome!
Hey Jack are you from MN and yeah I would love to see how cold it really gets in NJ…could be the same there as it is in ND…I doubt it though, haha.
It was 60 in mercer county N.J. in january… I rode. Then again i rode when it was 20 in january too.
Wife and I had our first ride outside on Sunday here in rural eastern Ontario. Temp was an abnormal high 50F (10C) and the roads were surprisingly clear of sand due to earlier rainfall. It felt fantastic to get off the trainer and be outside. For us in the snowbelt it’s beyond comprehension how some people in southern climes ride indoors on nice days.
We’re out 2-3 weeks earlier than normal. Let’s hope we don’t get another March snowstorm, which is entirely possible.
As for riding (and running) in the cold? Honestly, I’d rather do it in the cold than in the stinko hot/humid weather in some places. If you get sweaty in cold climes you can always peel clothes off. Don’t have that option in the hot places.
Did you wear the speedo or the spiderman outfit?
I know the weather in ND gets ridiculously cold, I frequent upstate NY and the temps there are somewhat similar, seen -30 and -40’s. If I lived there, I would probably invest in one of those CycleOps indoor trainers ![]()
I am just saying there have to be warmer days here and there and while its pretty much impossible to go out when the temps go below zero, there are times when the right gear would let you get out now and again. Ever seen the Sidi remote control heated shoe inserts…I totally want a pair for next year.
Its funny, I spoke with someone over the weekend that said 40 was too cold for him, guess its all relative.
Save up some $$$ for next winter and get an Assos Fugujack. It makes Chicago winters feel like a brisk fall morning without looking like the Michelin Man. With a good baselayer, I was toasty riding into a headwind with flurries at 18 F. Let’s you ride all through the winter…there’s no excuse now!!!
I do not know what the issues with the weather are, now here it is 90+ degrees today, i am sweating buckets, balls do not retract they are so damn hot they are scrapping on the floor, only thing that gets me through is the gatorade, and the salt tablets and the thought of jumping in the 78 degree pool when i get home, now that is cold!

I envy you. The closest I get to a 78 degree pool is when my shower drain gets plugged up.
