Well the day is finally here, I race tomorrow for the first time. I am looking for some advice on everything from what to eat tonight, to what not to wear, to what to bring, and how prep myself. The race is only a sprint, but I would like to have my first time be a decent one.
Don’t eat or wear anything that you didn’t eat or wear during training.
Enjoy the experience.
Attend any pre-race meetings.
Arrive a little early to avoid the lines.
Make sure you have bar ends on your bike (a common, easily prevented DQ).
Enjoy the experience.
Don’t push too hard too early. Save something for the run.
Read the USAT rules (available at uastriathlon.org) about position, blocking, and drafting if you haven’t already.
Have a good day. Whatever happens try to enjoy yourself, enjoy the moment, and don’t worry. You have lots of triathlons in front of you and this is just the first.
Eat the same thing you’ve eaten the night before another big workout. Same with clothing–wear something you’ve worn before (tri shorts and singlet?) Don’t make any radical changes now.
When you get to the race site and get your TA set up, find the swim finish and then walk back to your bike. Often times it looks different coming the other direction, so you want to know where your bike is. Same with run out–find that and do a walk through.
get there when the transition area opens. The earlier the better. I am still amazed at every event I go to the amount of people running in to set up their stuff as I am walking down to the water for the start of the race…AMAZING!
Plus, you can get a good spot on the rack.
One last thing, do the swim to bike transition, from water to your bike. Just walk it. Get familiar with where your bike is so you don’t have to think about it when you are running up taking your wetsuit off!
And have A BLAST!!! First one of the season is always great fun!!!
