First impressions Hed3c Deep rear and standard front

First off…I have never owned a set of HED wheels…I have ridden JDisk, and many Zipp setups…and also Corimas, Planet X and Nimble Crosswinds.

I did 35 miles on a new set of HED3c’s, Deep rear and standard front tubulars today…

I must say that they are the best RACE wheelset that I have ever been on.
No, it is not a disk…but the rear Deep is very close…the wheels that I have are VERY true and stable. They feel very light and nimble…While riding today in a pretty strong crosswind I felt the sail effect of a full disk…(I rode a Zipp disk on a Zipp frame way back when)…almost effortless pedaling to maintain speed. My last wheelset was PX 101’s…these feel WAY faster…and more sturdy.

just an opinion…

cheers!

Of to get my Hed 3 standards next week
.

I’m debating getting a set of H3’s for racing/some training. It seems almost all the hed 3 owners here love their wheels. Add to that, the wheelset is actually one of the more affordable new and used.

My LBS guy had the same point that Tom brings up about the wheels showing the most benefit at speeds over 25mph. My only question: what (if any) is the disadvantage of the H3 under 25mph?

its not the speed that matters

its the average yaw angle

if you are going 10mph on a calm day, you won’t have much yaw angle

if you are going 30mph in kona you will still have a lot of yaw angle

play with the graph, figure it out.

In Kona, you could be doing 60 mph, there’s still a lot of yaw angle. I was just wondering how the ride was comfort-wise. One thing I have heard about the H3’s is that while they are very stiff, it does translate to a lot of stiffness in the ride too, and the bumps can be quite jarring. I personally would give up 10 seconds to still be able to feel my rear end at the end of the bike. What did you find on your ride? And how are the roads around you? The roads in the northeast pretty much suck and have been known to bend bicycle, motorcycle and even car wheels.

The ride is comfortable but stiff…not disk stiff but nice. I only ride on pretty smooth roads.

I would be a little hesitant to ride all carbon wheels on “roads that pretty much suck”

I used to ride H3’s in the northeast- they were death- made any bike feel like an old school cannondale- ripped your butt right off. I also had huge issues with front wheel control.

In my experience, the most comfortable riding aero race wheel is a training wheel with a disc cover on it.

I’m already riding a 2006 Cannondale…LOL. Point taken, that’s why I’m looking at either a Zipp 404/1080 or a Hed Jet 60/90 combo.

There are some posts about the roughness of the ride, have you found any issues with this. I am no wheel expert but I assume there is some roughness asscoiated with having only three spokes and that there are similar issues with discs.

I don’t know so any advice is appreciated.
