First (ever) tri is an Ironman?

I have recently read where two of you stated that your first triathlon, ever, was an Ironman event. How common is this? Me, I’ve yet to even contemplate an Iron race eventhough I’ve got 10 solid years and nearly 50 races on my tri resume including some respectable Half Iron finishes (sub 5:00:00).

What’s wrong with 5K onto 10K onto Half Marathon? Kissing to cop a feel and then Monica? Boonesfarm - PBR - Jack Daniels? What ever happened to the journey, foreplay, and earning your stripes? Am I just old school…

PBR to Jack Daniels is quite a jump…I think you would need to throw in at least some Bud Light or Shiner (for TX People) or Fat Tire (for the CO people) before you move on to JD…

I wonder about this, too. I think that generally, if you’re looking to maximize your potential and longetivity in the sport, you’re far better off being patient and building up the distances raced over a period of years.

I think it would be a good idea to have a rule of thumb for how fast to step up from sprints, to olys, to half-IM, then to IM. Sort of like the rule of thumb about increasing running mileage by no more than 10% a week.
