I am floating a trial balloon about a four day Ironman training Camp in Lake Placid next year. The dates would be from Thursday, June 9 through Sunday June 12, 2005. the idea is for a high volume, low intensity four day training session open only to those who leave their egos at home.
Expert instruction on all aspects of fit and technique will be provided by the author of the soon to be famous book titled “Four, uh, no make that Five Years to a 13 hour Ironman, maybe”. I haven’t exactly written this book yet, but be assured that it will be famous.
I think I can make arrangements for massage treatments.
Activities would include the obvious swimming, biking and transition runs to the not so obvious including:
Hill repeats on the Keene hill. Yes that means going up the Keene hill. KOM points will be awarded and the winners buy lunch for the group in one of the Keene restaurants.
Climb of Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway. This is an 8 mile climb with an average 8% grade. It is a tour de France caliper hill. I believe riders can climb this hill so long as they are off the mountain by 9:00 when it opens to vehicular traffic. KOM winners buy dinner for the group.
Lake Placid Marathon. Lake Placid is holding a mrathon/ half marathon / relay on June 12 that campers can enter. The idea is to trash our legs with lots of climbing and volume and then do the race on Sunday. Running on trashed legs is something some of need to practice for the following month. I will probably only do the half, but you never know.
Cost would be nominal ($40 maybe) in order to cover pizza and beer. Lodging would be at one of the (cheap) area hotels and be on you.
Would anyone be interested in this? It is really boring going up there alone.
Hey there…I’m in. I went up by myself this year, but the weather kept me from training too much. Would defintely be up for a camp. My local tri club sends a bus up every year, but I don’t know if there will be enough people next year…so, keeping options open.
It looks like a very popular weekend in LP. First with the marathon, and then I think that is also the same weekend as the MultiSport IM Camp weekend with PNF, and I think I saw at least one other camp by a top coach the same time
I thought about doing a training week during race week next year, volunteering, and then getting in the cue for 06. So count me as a possible. Nice race Art and congrats on the steady improvement.
Dev Paul, who posts on this forum frequently, organizes an annual training event in Lake Placid called Epicman. The distances are 3 km/180km/21.1km. This year there were 30+ people (mainly from the Ottawa area) who started and 25 individuals completed the whole distance. It was held on June 8 (Thursday). Here’s a link to information about this year’s event.
Parking is a big hassle at the Northwoods Inn, though maybe that wouldn’t be a problem that time of year. My first guess would be Cobble Mountain Lodge at the top of Papa Bear. That is a popular tri camp base of operations.
I think that sounds like a great idea. I’m not sure if I can commit to it so far out, but please include me in a list of interested potential participants.
i think it would be a great idea for anyone doing next year’s race. i’ll be doing CDA next year, so the timing is too close for me, but if for some reason the date moves earlier, then i would be interested in going to LP to get ready.
