I’m planning on doing a hundred miles this weekend, however… my longest ride has been 78 miles. I’m riding 100 with a group this weekend… would this be concern to any of you to gun 22 more miles? I’m doing IM FL… in 59 days.
Bring plenty of gu/favourite energy gel and have fun. It is much easier to do 100 miles with a group rather than solo.
if you have done 78 miles, you will be fine. You are going with a group, so if you are worried, suck some wheel and that will save you a good chunk of energy. Oh yeah, and to keep with ST tradition, HTFU!!!
Depends on the group. I’ve done them at a leisure pace but did one this past weekend that was a 100 mi. hammerfest.
Make sure you eat and drink. Bring lots of gels, a banana, bars, etc. Two bottles on the frame, not one.
You shouldn’t have a problem with the extra 22 miles as long as you pace yourself. Try to stay in the middle and suck wheel as much as possible. You’ll have to take a turn at the front pulling, but don’t over do it.
NYJan,
If you’ve already done a 78 mile ride and survived, a 100 mile ride won’t be much different.
It may help to think of the 100 mile ride as four 25 mile mile rides back to back or three 35 mile rides back to back.
If you are riding with a group it will be very unusual if the group doesn’t stop occasionally at a party store or a sandwich stop during the ride to both rest a minute and to fuel up. These stops are what you can use to break the ride up into smaller rides.
You should do fine. Have a great time but ride within yourself. Don’t get all excited and spend way too much time on the front pulling for the group. If and when you get on the front, don’t spend more than a minute or two there before rolling off and drifting back to sit in some more. That’s what the group is there for, to share the load. Don’t forget that fact!
Try to consume 350 -450 calories per hour while on the bike. That’s a combination of your sports drink (and don’t just take water in both your bottles on the bike) and a gel (perhaps) and a Fig Newton or granola bar or power bar, etc. Do this and you will feel great at the end rather than run into the ground and ravenous at the end.
Good luck
You should have no problem. Just don’t get too excited and go too hard the first 40-50.
