Finis Tempo Trainer

I know a few of you guys use a Finis tempo trainer in the pool. However, have u guys actually used one in a race…?

Paul

One of my friends used it in a race. He was thorough and made sure to get approval from the head referee so he wouldn’t get a DQ.

Eventually he found that he didn’t need it all the time as the tempo was ingrained in his head. He still uses it but not quite as often and I’m not sure if he’ll use it in a race this year or not.

Try to ask the head official before the race, via email or at the expo, if you can to be sure though.

was talking to one of the national teams just last week and the coach asked me again why I still hadn’t gotten the tempo trainer that he told me to get last year. He said that in non ITU races a lot of his athletes use it to race with. Sounds like he considers them pretty effective and he has some of the best athletes around under him.

I use the tempo trainer for running cadence training. I’ll warn you though that it produces a fairly quiet beep and in traffic you may not hear it. In swimming you keep it in your swim cap and so the sound is heard pretty easily. I really like it for cadence work for running and found it on the Pose web site. You can find it on just about every swim site.

For those of you that do have one, have you tried to get the battery changed? Is it easy to change?

Actually i do own a tempo trainer. Its just that i’ve never thought of using it in a race condition (during the swim) till this year. I’ve only considered using it this year because i’ll be doing my first IM. It would be nice if i was just swimming alone, but if i do catch a draft, will that mess me up since i may have to slow my stroke rate…?

I have also noticed that my beeps are getting softer (i think). I looked at it and could not figure out how to get into it. I’m afraid that a forced entry may mess up the waterproofness of it.

Also, I’ve noticed that my TT shuts off after about 30 mins of continuous uninterrupted use. Is it the same for you guys…? Is there a way to prolong the usage time before it shuts down…?

Anyone from Finis care to chime in…?

Paul

Mine shuts off as well after 30 minutes and it appears to be set that way at the factory. I have found no way to change the shutoff time. It is disconcerting in a long run when it just stops. I have also noticed the fact that it has gotten softer over time and believe it related to the battery power. Too bad it appears to be disposable when the battery goes in it. I am trying to figure out a way to get into it to replace the battery but can’t seem to pry it open without major damage.

Yeah, mine shuts off after 30 mins also. If you want it to go longer, you just hafta hit one of the buttons, and you get another 30 mins. from that point. (makes sense, you wouldn’t want it to accidentally stay on and run until the battery dies)

I use it for cadence pacing for running. I dig it. On a long run, I’ll hafta hit a button 2 or 3 times, but no biggie.

Haven’t had it long enuff for the battery to wear out yet. I do hope it is replaceable, as having to drop $30 again rather than a few $'s for a battery would suck.
