Fingers on a Frame in Austin

One of the local Austin tri shops is doing a “hands on hardbody” kind of thing for a Guru Chrono and other tri equipment…We’re about 67 hrs in and there are about 6-7 people left. They started with 25. At least 2 of the remaining participants recently completed IMAZ.

Check the story out here: http://news8austin.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=136402

Since they started at 7:30 Friday evening, other donations have been added, including a pair of Zipp 303 wheels and an anonymous $500 cash!

If you’re in Austin and haven’t been by yet, GO! It’s at Jack and Adam’s on Barton Springs. http://jackandadams.com/

I was just there two weeks ago visting from Michigan for a conference. Really friendly guys and a pretty awesome tri-shop. If I were there my secret weapon would be a few of Chuy’s roasted chicken burritos with hatch washed down with a few Texas Martini’s. There would be no stopping me.

They are down to 4 after 84 hours. More stuff added to the pot by local merchants last night.

This is rad! Do they have a webcast of the video footage or anything? Any info on the remaining four (i.e. endurance backgrounds)?

It is really cool! No webcast. :frowning:

One more out since 2 AM. Supposedly she was a former contestant on the Bachelor (only heard this, can’t confirm). Her name is Wende Parks.

I can only give you details on one because she’s a friend - Ginny Rohlich. She’s a 3 time Ironman finisher, most recently IMAZ (also FL and WI), and a 50 y.o. grandmother!

Sam Ledge is one of the other contestants, and a girl named Martha. Don’t know anything on them. (Maybe someone from the shop can give us some info???) Other than they are all NUTS!!!

wendy went out last night a little before 10 i think. sam is a 20 years old cyclist was and was thinking about getting into triathlon (and they only guy left). i dont know much about martha, she seems pretty calm. i left last night about about 12 so i dont know what else has happened since then. maybe ill go by a little later. its insane!

From a the Run Tex Forum:

Jim was looking very strong last night, but never really recovered from the very difficult 3:00-6:30am segment. He started to suffer from delusion and his mental state was foggy. It really freaked me out to see him like that. He stepped away from the rail to give me a hug and then went back to the rail. Jack Murray and I then had to explain to him that he had just been DQ’d. He didn’t even know what we were talking about. As friends escorted him off I broke down and cried like a baby in front of everyone. I’m sure people thought that I was upset because he quit. I cried because it was horrifying for me to see him suffer like that. We have been married for almost 7 years now (together for 9) and I had never seen him so incoherent. It was something I hope I never see again.

I was with Jim and the rest of the competitors 98% of the time. If they are still out there, please stop by and give them your support. They are really suffering right now.

3 people as of 8:30am CST. How long do the hands on a Hard Body guys/girls typically stay standing?

the interesting thing was, at 5 pm on sunday, there were 5 women and 2 men. Some of the women looked like they were fresh as a daisy, but the men looked rough. Makes you wonder about that whole “higher threshold for pain” thing. I dunno.

good luck to all that’s left!

Jack is posting on the RunTex forum here:

His latest post:

"It is 8:43 a.m., 85 hours in. Ginny R. has just let go of the rail. She waved at her mother. There are two left. Sam Lege and Martha Riveira. They are un-beleivable. Sorry if my spelling is off. We are also tired. Jack "

It’s a “Human Drama Thing”

Latest update from the RunTex forum:

"Hello all. My name is Gilbert, I am Sam’s older brother and I have been one of Sam’s “Domestique” for the past few days. As of 11am, Sam and Martha are the last man and woman standing. I am so amazed at how they endure such torture. All of the competitors are winners in my eyes.

Sam’s ankles have been swelling and during breaks we elevate his legs, ice his ankles, and massage his feet and calves. He gets a little coffee, gatorade, water, orange juice and some “Odwalla” vitamin shakes. He will eat fig newtones, chips, clif/power bars, cereal, fruits, tacos, donuts, and rice on breaks. He has been able to power nap on the 15 min breaks that he gets every 6 hours.

Mentally he says he is strong, but his lower legs are in pain. Ibuprofen has seemed to help some. I tell him to just remain mentally strong…a strong mind and the body will follow I tell him. He says “Yes, I know”

He has been hallucinating, especially at nite. All the competitors have admitted to this happening. It’s so surreal sometimes he says. He’s seen elephants, pizzas on conveyor belts at Wendy’s Hamburgers, a mirror that doesnt exist in front of him, and sometimes he asks me what he is doing there. I tell him he’s in a contest to win this bike, the one in front of him. He replies, “Why am I standing in this line, what are we in line for” He asked me what time the test, what test?? I get a real kick out of some of our conversations, but I know he doesnt like feeling so out of it, he tells me he hates not being able to control his thoughts and vision at times.

Jack and Adam and there whole staff/helpers/friends have been so awesome too. I commend them on the great, fair, and orderly fashion they have conducted the contest in. They surely didn’t think they would be going for this long. I mean the rented chairs had to go back on Monday, they didn’t think they would need them past then. They brought in some new, sturdier chairs though. They are a real class act in my book.

Whatever the outcome, I love my brother and I know win or lose he will always remember how hard he pushed, how much pain he tolerated, how much he ate even when his taste buds were gone and everything was like styrofoam. This will help him to know he can accomplish whatever he can in life if he sets his mind to it. He is only 20 yrs old and has much to learn, but I am thankful for him to experience this.

Thanks to all supporters so far. Go by Jack and Adams and cheer them both on. I am sorry if I ramble and have grammar errors, but I am very tired ( just finished my domestique shift) and I need to get some sleep for the night shift, if there is one tonite. Hopefully not though… :stuck_out_tongue:

Ciao
Gilbert"

And it’s over…

From the RunTex forum "It’s over. Sam’s dad pulled him away from the rail at around 7:00 p.m. because he couldn’t stand to see his son with no more mental capacity and legs so swollen.

Sam and Martha are both winners in my book for their amazing endurance."

Video here (kinda long obviously!!!): http://www.terra360.com/html/fingers.html

25 people, 95 hours, 25 minutes, 40 seconds.

This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen!!!

this is very interesting from a socio-psychological perspective. i’d be interested in hearing what the winner and other contestants have to say once they have regained their sanity!

one question for the winner obviously is: was it worth it? Winning $6500-7500 of tri schwag (i think that is about what it was) for 95.5 hours work seems like a good deal - not many of us make $76 an hour. But those are some pretty tough hours!!! I wonder whether these people would have been willing ahead of time to spend 4 days without sleep to get said prize? Anyways, congrats to the winner, but my heart sure goes out to the runner up!
