While I love them at home, I am bummed not to have oatmeal or chocolate chip…my latest IM nutrition strategy is a half mary stop for “real food” and I don’t think figs will do it for me.
And after seeing how the FN’s in Hawaii didn’t hold up too well and turned into sort of a fig cobbler crumble at the aid stations, I am not thinking they will look too appetizing either.
FNs are low fat, and much better than regular fatty cookies, IMHO. Of course, I’ve never done an IM, so I don’t know how things change when you are 130 miles into it…
dammit, if only they’d use fat free fig newtons, those don’t crumble and are much moister so you don’t get that dry mouth feel while scarfing down the newtons. Nabisco, FAT FREE, use FAT FREE
I’m telling you, it makes no logical sense but fat free fig newtons are waaaaaay better tasting and easier to eat than regular newtons. Try it, I didn’t believe it either. I took a pack of regular newtons on a ride just last week and ended up with a packet of crumbs and some fig filling…
I’m not really a low fat fan of any foods, but regular newtons suck
"Of course, I’ve never done an IM, so I don’t know how things change when you are 130 miles into it… "
They’re definitely a welcome break from Powerbars, but, speaking from experience (after probably eating too many during an IM bike leg), an excess quantity of Fig Newtons may force unplanned stops at the old port-a-john during an IM run.
For all of the nutritionally-correct reasons, Fig Newtons are my Cookie of Choice. However, late in a long race (or even a long training ride), they lose their appeal. The cravings begin in earnest, and sometimes sinful cookies and flat cola are the best things I could ever hope for. I rarely eat p.b. and grape jelly sandwiches, but by the time I hit Wilmington at IMLP last year I was practically drooling knowing that one of those babies was just waiting for me in my special needs bag. I had more Fig Newtons there, too, but they finished the race in the bottom of the bag. Having said all that, though, I would welcome F.N.s at IMNA aid stations — just in case I feel like fueling wisely throughout the race.
they taste great but definitely have hydrogenated fat… if i buy em i’d look for whole wheat ones without the bad fat. after 9 hours of cycling and swimming i’d probably not care though…
