Fianc'e Problems- No Intimacy

I’ve known my fianc’e for almost six years, been dating five years and engaged the past six months. We are both in our mid/late 20’s.

We get along extremely well, have the same interests and life aspirations. We click on so many levels, enjoy each others company and are all in all a great fit for each other.

All would seem like it was going fine looking in.

However, there are small cracks in our relationship that are starting to worry me.

I know having regular sex is only a very small part of a strong relationship, but we have not even come close to anything intimate in the last six months. When we get into bed at the end of the day to go to sleep, it is a quick peck on the cheek to say goodnight and then we both roll over and go to sleep. I try to cuddle and kiss a little bit longer. I try to initiate some sort of physical touch but she is never interested, always saying she is tired, not that into it, or just snaps at me saying she isn’t in the mood.

I’ve tried the talking through our problems approach, which has worked extremely well in the past for other issues. I’ve asked her is she still attracted to me, does she find me physically attractive, why she doesn’t want to do anything intimate, etc. She just says she just isn’t that into it anymore, is tired all the time (from work and exercise and life in general). I’ve tried arranging date nights, cooking her chef inspired dinners, picnics in the park, weekends away but nothing seems to work.

I’m feeling pretty helpless and don’t know where to turn.

I feel awful for doing this, but recently I’ve signed up for an online “fling” website, which is like online dating but the reason for meeting up is obviously different. I even went as far as topping up the account with $50 of real money to but “credits” so I could message people. I’ve got to the point where people have arragned a meeting time and place and wanted to exchange phone numbers. When ever it gets to that point a huge amount of guilt and dissapointment comes over me and I always pull out and not talk to that person for fear of meeting them, sending my world crumbling if anyone ever found out about it. The reason I joined is because I wanted some sort of excitement and the feeling of a woman ‘wanting me physically’ which I’m not getting at all with my fianc’e. I feel terrible for doing this.

I’m really quite stuck. I’m frustrated with the situation but when I try to fix it with my fianc’e it isn’t happening. I understand she just isn’t into being physical and sex was never a big part of our relationship at the beginning whilst we were dating (perhaps having intimacy once every fortnight or so).

Where do I turn?

What do I do?

I love this woman deeply but I feel stuck.

Are you willing to spend the rest of your life in a sexless relationship?

Will your future wife stay with you if you seek sex outside of your marriage?

If you answer both of these “no” then…

In no particular order

a) Stop the “fling” website nonsense
b) figure out what’s wrong with her (has she changed her birth control in the last six months is she “waiting” for marriage?)
c) tell her how this is affecting you bluntly and explicitly
d) if it can’t get solved don’t marry her because you will be miserable
.

Having a good sex life is crucial. And I’m not talking about banging it out every night, I’m talking about both of you being on the same page. If you both have low sex drives, and are happy with very little intimacy, then there’s no real problem. However, that is not your case.

I would be honest with her. Bring this up, not when are you trying to get in her pants though. Tell her this is starting to become a very big, very real issue for you that will end in the demise of your relationship. There’s no beating around the bush here. Tell her you are bringing it up because you are worried, and want to build a stronger relationship for both of you.

Also, try being more assertive. Cooking dinners, doing romantic things etc are all great for telling her you love her, but, do very little for making her feel sexy and like you want her body. Send her a sexy text during the day, or, when you’re out grocery shopping with her, whisper something a little dirty to her. Find out what makes her feel sexual. Wake up those fires, my man!

Lastly, see a good marriage counsellor. Relationships are work, sometimes hard work. A good counsellor is worth their weight in gold. Identifying problems while they are small and working through them are crucial. There has got to be a reason she isn’t in to it, you just need to find away to get her to the table where you can start working on it.

Good luck!

ETA: Stop the fling website. No good will ever come of that. Even if you connect with someone and have a great time, you’re still just adding to the problem at home. If it comes about that you have to break it off with your fiance, do it in a way that at least allows you to hold your head high. Then you will be free to pursue whoever you want.

This.

This sound more like the Grand Canyon than “small cracks.”.

Sex is not a “small” part

Bail now.

Probably a reason you waited six years so far.

Just wait until you have been married for 20+ years and have kids, because if you don’t figure this out soon, you will be sooo screwed in the future.

You’re going to have a face-face talk and tell her it’s bothering you. Good luck.

I think you are underestimating the importance of a heathy sex life in a marriage. Intimacy is one of the top issues in any relationship. And the lack thereof does signify issues. It would be a total deal breaker for me.

How is your communication otherwise . Do you two actually talk about real issues or avoid them? Do you two connect on serious issues and work through tough spots well?

I think you two need to sit down and have a deep meaningful conversation. You need to come at it with tons of compassion and empathy. It is important that she doesn’t think anything is wrong with her. It may be 100% issues on her end. But it could be that she needs more from you. Men often do things (date night, etc) because they think that is what she want. Often women want simpler things.

Explain to her how important intimacy is in a relationship. Ask her how important she thinks it is. Start there. Think baby steps. Build a bridge between the two positions and then revisit it in the future.

As for the other stuff, delete the account. Thats nonsense and not helpful. Also, it may come to be that you two aren’t meant for each other. If that is the case, then accept it and end it. Don’t drag it out hoping it will get better (see also the ex payment thread)

bro, do not get married until you figure this out.
ending things before you get married will cost you emotionally.
ending things after you get married will you emotionally AND financially.

unless she has more assets. then, are you a gambling man?

…you will be sooo screwed in the future.

Figuratively speaking, definitely not literally.

To the OP, this is a pretty major issue. Breaking off an engagement sucks (I know) but going through divorce has got to be worse. Others here have suggested talking about it which I guess you can try. Honestly, I am not sure how much good that will do? At best, she works at it and “tries” to be more intimate. That lasts a little while, worst case scenario it lasts until after the wedding.

Stop the fling talk immediately. But, the fact you are even considering that option tells me you are over this relationship all ready. If you were all in, it wouldn’t even be an option. Also … PM sent.

Exactly, can a leopard change its spots? If she’s not interested in sex now, just wait until you’re married and have kids.

20 years? If there is no boinking now, kids down the road are most probably not going to be part of the picture.

This guaranteed to get better after you get married.

As in, soon you won’t have to worry about the peck on the cheek.

There could be a whole list of things going on. From her just not wanting to have sex to some sort of sexual dysfunction that makes sex unpleasant or painful. This sort of thing can be fixed, but everyone needs to want to fix it.

You need to figure out what is going on, sooner rather than later. If you can’t talk to her directly then you need to get to counseling, now.

Your relationship sounds a lot like mine did with my ex-wife. Dude, if there is no intimacy now and it’s a problem, then (as others have already stated) it is not going to get better over time and will become a bigger problem. If she isn’t into you physically, your efforts to get her more interested in the physical part of your relationship have failed and now you’re looking to have some NSA action on the side, then you need to drop a pair and end the relationship now before you get married. Save yourself the money of the wedding and divorce.

We were shaggin like rabbits in our 20’s, then for several decades while raising kids it dropped off, but still several times a week. Kids gone in our 50’s and things are good once again.

And you claim her cooter hurts from the bike?

it got to rest in her 30’s and 40’s.

**I feel terrible for doing this. **

You should. That is a horrible thing to do to your girlfriend. If she finds out I suspect that will be the end of it. If you are willing to entertain cheating now it isn’t going to change when you get married. If you’ve been with her that long surely you have some respect for her and probably still love her. Why would you want to hurt her?

Be an adult and save both of you further heartache. Talk to her about the lack of sex, how it makes you feel unwanted, then if she can’t fix it, move on.
