Female Riders

My sister has wanted to get a bike to start doing triathlons for a year or so now but is concerned about the safety of riding alone. Do any of you females ride alone and what have your experiences been? I figure you always run the risk of being in a vulnerable position but does being a lone female on a very rural road increase the instances of harrassment? The few females I know that ride always ride with other people so they aren’t a real good resource to use.

Ran this by my wife, she said that she almost nevers rides alone. She gets more honks yells etc by herself and has been follow before. Safety in numbers especially in rurla areas when a grab and go would be easy.

Also always have her ride with a mobile phone.

I ride solo most of the time though it’s usually “urban rural” and not in the middle of nowhere. I don’t worry about it and haven’t had any problems. I do always carry the cell phone.

My girlfriend rides alone and has definitely had some uncomfortable situations. She tries to stick to more major roads with large shoulders over back roads now. And also don’t ride/run at times when no one is around (very early/very late). I would agree that she should definitely carry a cell phone and perhaps a pepper spray as well. It is DEFINITELY something to be cognizant of, but not something you want to get paranoid/paralyzed by.

I guess it would depend where you live, but I almost always ride alone. In 10 years, I’ve yet to be put in a situation where I feel unsafe.

Yes, but look at where you ride compared to the ‘sticks’.

Would you ride down the backroads of Santee or Lakeside alone?

Out in the hills past Jamul, alone, far from civilization? We ride here there the time, I would not be happy out there alone, especially if I were female.

my wife rides alone pretty much all the time…and tends to flip her a finger a bit too easily for my taste…

Like I said, it depends where you live and I’ve obviously never choosen routes where I’m at risk, because honestly I’ve never thought about my safety as a female rider and riding solo. I’ve never even been to Santee or Lakeside in a car. I guess you could say I live a sheltered north county life.

gotcha, hey I saw signs out on today’s ride to Oceanside saying a portion the 101 near Carlsbad was closed next Sunday morning, what’s that all about?

not sure?!

Excellent choice Gary, but perhaps a bit large for the female hand. Might I suggest the Glock 27 .40 caliber - a highly concealable, personal defense pistol. Don’t forget the concealed carry permit to go with it. Then spend an raucous afternoon of fun shopping with the girls as you accessorize your new weapon. Shoulder holster, hip holster, ankle holster, thigh holster, fanny pack…the options, materials and colors are endless! Oh and do carry a cell phone so you can call law enforcement and tell them where they can find the perps body/s.

I agree…females should not ride alone. Yes carry a cell phone but hopefully there is area coverage where you are biking. Females should also never run alone. Not a good idea. Too many sad stories I’ve read about this in either Long Island or even Central Park. There are some real sickos out there. The other day some red neck yells out his truck window " Get the F on the side walk". I flipped him off. He started thinking about coming after me but I pulled out my cell. Must of had a warrent out for him because he took off.

I knew I liked you for a reason. I just took my 11 year old daughter shooting at the range for her first time last week. She much preferred the .22 Browning, but she did squeeze a few rounds out of a Glock. She was on BB’s since she was 4 son it wasn’t completely new to her.

sweet, I wonder if I can fit that in to my Jandd saddlebag?

Francois if I could find the article of this women jogger on Long Island who was killed several years back for doing something like that to the wrong person. They found her after her husband reported her missing from a Sunday morning run stabed many times with a screw driver. If I found the article I’ll post it so she can read it. Even though this is NY it can happen any where.

I know…it does worry me, but she is bloody stubborn!

Jeez, why don’t we just lock ourselves behind four walls and wait to die?

Women, and little kids get snatched, as do grown men. Be wary but not worried. Not healthy to live in paranoia.

Spend your time looking over your shoulder and you won’t see what’s in front of you.

Maybe when papa comes home, after you fix him dinner and rub his feet, he will be nice and follow you around the block in the car, just to make sure them crazy folk out there don’t snatch you up.

Oh what a life …

Today’s quote from a car parked on the side of the road, heard going south on 101: “you suck, … Lance can beat you”

God I hope so.

Also, keeping count from the last two weeks, I am up to 12 “LANCE!” yells.

I wish I would have kept the stats from last year.
