Fell In Love Again - Road Bike

This past weekend I went down to Dallas for a wedding. I rented a basic Trek road bike from Richardson Bike Mart (thanks RBM!!) and hammered for four hours on Saturday for my last IMOOO long ride. I forgot how much fun a road bike is and how much hotter Dallas is than Milwaukee.

Thinking about selling my P2C and buying a S1 this winter so I get the best of both worlds.

Have fun out there…I got too caught-up in long rides and FTP %s, hammering on the road bike was pure fun.

if you want the best of both worlds you need a p2c AND an S1

if you have only an S1 you have the best of the road world but kind of a 2nd tier tri bike (think of the poor watts being wasted by drop bars and STI shifters bashing the wind!)

i just bought an R3. in fact, i bought 5 of them. one for me, and 4 to join the stable of bikes retailers ride when they come to take our workshops.

I’ll live, I’m only a 11-12 hour IM guy. I’d keep both but my better half would kill me with three two-year olds…

Thanks for the P2C, bought it from ATC in 2006 when I was at UT.

do you have only one bike because you are an 11-12 hour IM guy or are you an 11-12 IM guy because you only have a tri bike?

I would argue that most triathletes would be better off riding road bikes for a few reasons, safety, comfort which equals more time spent on bike. A few days ago a young guy came by my house for help fixing his bike, he is signing up for IM with not much previous experience in any of the 3 sports (not my idea). Anyways he says he hates the Tri bars and I told him to take them off for the next 8 months and just go ride.

My wife only ever rode a road bike and won her IM AG several times including IM LP, there is just way to much focus and endless talk of aerodynamics and bike setup and less on enjoyment of riding.

I don’t train enough - average only 8-10 hours a week with max weeks of 12 hours.

I know how you feel. I train on a Felt Ar3 90% of the time. Then race on my Felt B2 pro. I have thought of trading in both
for a new AR1, but when you are going hard in a race on your aero bars on the road bike, it is difficult to shift back and
forth like I need to. I save alot of time in a good aero position on the Tri Bike. It is not my favorite to ride, but definitely
faster.

I know what you mean about road bikes. I ruptured a disk in my neck a few years ago and switched back to a road bike for comfort issues. Since then I’ve raced all my tris on a roady. I’m not trying to win. I just like putting it all on the line. This will be my 26th year of racing and it’s funny that everyone thinks I’m a newb because I don’t have aTT bike. Keep on killin’ it!

lemme ask this…was the increase in enjoyment due to the bike, or just the change in scenery and / or attitude? IOW, was it really the bike, or was it just a more enjoyable ride that would have caused th same emotions on any bike?

Just playing devil’s advocate…

A local Cat1 bike racer road races on a P2C. Convert that bitch.

Bought an S1 earlier this year with the intent to sell my tri-bike. Never sold the tri-bike, which I am happy about, and absolutely love the road bike. I’m a hill guy and they are so much more enjoyable on the S1. I say buy the road bike (not necessarily the S1) and keep the tri-bike.
