Feeling faint during workouts

For the passed week during some workouts I’ve had a faint feeling come over me. On monday I was in the middle of a 2000 yd. continuous swim set and I started to feel dizzy. I slowed down and swam through it. Last night during an easy run, I started to feel dizzy as well. I would stop at waterfountains to drink and feel even dizzier. My HR was around 140ish.
I haven’t bumped up training too quickly and am approaching my peak for vineman in less than a month.
During a few run workouts last year when training for IM I had the same sensation. I’m careful about hydration and nutrition and am kind of baffled by it.
Any clues?

Consider seeing a doctor. The only time I felt like that was when I was really anemic from a GI bleed.

Wouldn’t hurt to get a little bloodwork and an EKG just to make sure everything is ok.

No clue what the problem could be… but since you had the problem on monday and yesterday, my suggestion is to stop training completely until I age up. Hopefully the problem has gone away by then.

Happens to me, too, but it’s usually in combination with other symptoms… What’s your blood pressure like? I have normally very low BP, and during my big training periods, I get like you described.

No idea what the BP is, I haven’t had a phsyical in a few years. I’ve always been on the low side, maybe it’s even lower do to all the training.
I guess consulting a doctor is always the best way to go…

I was getting dizzy spells awhile ago. I would get my BP checked at the nurse’s office at work and whenever this would happen, my BP would usually be under 105/65. If it’s above that, I’m fine.

If that’s the case for you, try doing stuff that will raise your blood pressure. Eat more sodium. Drink more coffee. Actually, that might not be so good. Either way, go to see a doctor and try to figure out what’s going on with you.

if you haven’t had a physical in years, now sounds like a good time.

What is the temperature and humidity like where you workout?

I have found it very hard to maintain an intense workout during the oppressive heat and humidity of the Southeast. Even at relatively low heart rates 120 - 140, I simply could not continue my outdoor run more than 20 - 30 minutes in 90+ weather. Running on a treadmill in an AC’d gym was not a problem.

I have abnormally low blood pressure (as does my grandmother, mother and sister) and my training only exacerbates it by making my blood pressure even lower. I often feel faint after workouts and have passed out on the train on the way too work. The doctor simply said she was suprised I don’t pass out more and to try and eat something salty after every workout (I eat a pickle as soon as I walk in the door). However, I’ve had these symptoms my whole life so unless your blood pressure is suddenly lower because of increased training or for some other reason, there could be another source, like being anemic, to explain your faintness.

It has been particularly hot and humid lately, but that happens every summer in NYC. I’ll try the saltier foods thing, I could use the salt anyway because of the vast amounts of it I sweat out. If that doesn’t work, i’ll be calling the doc.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
