Didn’t he say that is his only WTCS race? He isn’t on the next start list and I am not sure he is doing Weihai. Would that give him points enough to race the Grand Final?
He isn’t back to full training load yet so I can’t see him risking anything by travelling to AUS when he can’t even be top 20 in the series.
Yep it’s great to see the swim and bike being driven hard again, it’s like 10yrs ago when Brownlees and Gomez were at their peak.
I do think sprint distance is a much better format for seeing who are the best all round triathletes.
It allows for attacking the swim and bike, and even the bigger, more powerful athletes can run a good 5k when fatigued.
As much as I love Yee, who’s the greatest tri runner we’ve seen, these shorter and harder courses expose his swim and bike.
Triathlon would do better to make the sprint distance the Olympic race . More exciting for spectators and doesn’t allow any weaknesses. The 10k run currently disproportionately favours the pure runners.
His swim and bike weren’t exposed when it mattered in Paris!!!
His focus is elsewhere post Olympic for both his physical and mental growth. That being said Hauser has kicked everyone’s butt this year and you can’t fault perfection. What is even more amazing is he raced on a loaned bike yesterday.
Oh I looked at your profile and you didn’t join ST until '17, which I think was right about the time he left/quit/fired/removed. So wasn’t sure if you were around tri when he was commenting. He was the ultimate inside scoop commentator and would tell us during the telecast.
Was it just this race where his swim and bike have been exposed? Or have we seen it exposed in non Olympic distance over the last couple of years? You’ll have to jog my memory?
I have no clue what you are talking about with BS in the Sanders thread when the original comment was on the current itu commentators. I’m sure he does miss his “1st coach” and all the interesting race dynamics he brought…Chrabot says hello.
Nah mate, I didn’t join ST the minute I got inerested in triathlon! Huge CB fan! Everytime he posts in here I’ll tell him how much he’s missed on the mic.
I do think Holland and Luis offer unrivalled insight as athletes who was/are still racing the athletes we’re actually seeing race and both have world/Olympic titles.
Neither plus the T100 bloke, are any good at exciting commentary though…one of the GOAT moments in ITU history done by the absolute master duo on the mic enjoy…
I can’t remember the podcast but he did one maybe 3 years ago now, and he talks about how he would do all the commentary for all the old itu “recap” videos starting way back in the day from his basement. I think he has a book out now, if it’s him in audio form and I think I may just now have to go buy it to support him.
That’s really the issue with the olympic distance run. It’s not even the fact that it turns into hand holding on the bike. It’s that really only a few select can actually run that type of speed required. It’s crazy they’ll have 40 come into T2 together and by 200m into the run it’s already down to 6 guys at most.
I won’t go into my “get off my lawn” with MTR+Olympic race rosters being required to be the same. Makes absolutely zero sense other than “that’s how it has to be”.
Totally agree with you, the Oly distance run selects and rewards for a certain type of athlete. Which isnt necessarily the best all round triathlete.
Whereas with a sprint distance they can go all out for the entire swim bike and the difference in abilities over 5k v 10k are smaller so the gaps off the bike matter.
I guess that’s what made brownlees and Gomez so special, they were the best at all 3 legs and still the fastest runners.
Isn’t the problem that the IOC won’t accept more triathletes at the Games? This wouldn’t be such an issue if they shortened the individual Olympic race by half, but then Kris Gemmel (I’m sorry, I should’ve said KG) will tell you “no, we want 4 hours of TV time for individual races and not 2”. Quantity over quality.
Yes the IOC won’t let tri add athletes. Which is why if I’m WT, just make the move to sprint distance. They already race most Wtcs events as sprint over the last what decade anyways. The “rumors” of oly going to sprint has been around since I started itu coaching in ‘12 and that was engaging with international coaches, who were making the assumption.
His swim wasn’t that bad. Just behind Henry Graf who made the front group. He has been concentrating on running. I am pretty sure that if he hadn’t he would have made the front group. He is a master of making the front group, even if he has a couple of more seconds deficit in the swim.
Also, Haydn Wilde has sustained quite a serious injury and did the t100 the day before. So it is pretty hard to read so much into this result.
Alex Yee is on the rome works cup start list.
Federations give athletes a lot of freedom during the first year of a four year Olympic cycle. Not only did he concentrate on his marathon (he committed 100% to that) but he also had quite a nasty overuse injury afterwards.
He has done just enough to keep his ranking high enough to get into races. He is young, numerous Olympic medals, world champion etc. He will be back at the top. It is a long time to LA.
