Can it be done?
What drugs would I need?
2.5 Ironmans / year to get in via the legacy lottery? (whatever it’s called)
Note: - not dissing that plan, just saying.

Is that your story
Not really.
Maybe my story in a sound byte.
Emily got me motivated to quit smoking in '09. She conned me into training for a 13.1 in April of 2010. I hated every day of training but loved every one of the 118.5 minutes of racing. She’s regretted it ever since.
Tell us more e.g. how much did you spend?
Money wise? Lots, for sure.
It’s my only hobby and the only thing I really waste money on. I’ve worked pretty dang hard to bring it in and I spend it on things that make me happy.
I think most people work to make money for stuff they don’t have time to enjoy because they are working.
Regardless, I sold my motorcycle, my dirt bike, and my boat. Then my shiny car and my little RZR side by side. Basically ditched all my toys.
It’s actually quite a bit cheaper to be a triathlete than most hobbies.
Heck, most guys around here spend more money on fall football WATCHING than we spend on gear.
Why Kona? Why not just focus on losing the weight and getting fit?
If someone is going to tell you now that you have zero chance to go to Kona are you just going to go back on the couch and get fatter?
Can it be done?
What drugs would I need?
no talent? probably not.
a little talent? probably if injuries don’t get in the way.
Fat guys don’t often know if they have talent or not.
Because some of us need to have an actual competitive target. I know I would just sit on the couch and play videogames if I was to just focus on losing weight and “getting fit”. If I have an actual long term target, then I’m much more motivated to get my workouts in.
What has happened with me in the past, is that I have had the “getting fit” as a goal. I put the work in for a few months and “got fit”. Then what? It’s aimless and directionless. and I need to have direction in order to do something or else I get bored.
Talent is overrated…
sick bike at Chattanooga, impressive; just need to work on that run now.
Talent is overrated…
How rated is it?
When my wife and I train the same amount, she is 2 minutes faster over 40k than me.
When Gray Skinner trains half as much as me, he is 8 minutes faster over 40k than me…But I am faster over 15 seconds.
talent is pretty sweet.
Has she always trained exactly the same as you? Done the exact same races as you?
How do you measure talent? It’s this nebulous term that gets used but means nothing… End of the day, work hard and achieve… Some people are going to be faster than others, but how much of that is “talent” and how much is “history”?
Yes
.
I don’t see a problem. As a fat guy, you might need to buy two seats on the airplane but I’m not aware of any restrictions on fat people going to Kona. Just keep your shirt on at the beach.
Can it be done?
What drugs would I need?
Sure. I think they sell a few slots on eBay. Enough drugs to net you about 45k in profits unless you have the extra cash now
Maybe you are really a track guy?
Talent is underrated. But being inherently good at something won’t make you as happy as really working for it!
Weight can be lost… the talent part is the big issue… Undiscovered talent ( never really ran, biked or swam ) is different than having a triathlon history and looking at the times in your age group of the qualifiers and knowing you couldn’t come anywhere close to that pace even if you were doing them as single events and you cut the distances in half. In that case you can lose weight train harder/better take drugs and you still won’t get anyplace close to qualifying.
