Fat Ass America

I was in Indianapolis tonight for business, I stayed at a Hotel right next to the RCA Dome where the Colts played the Bears on MNF. I decided it would be fun to go to the game after all it would be better than sitting in my hotel room by myself. So I scalp a ticket from a guy for $20 which bought me a a spot about half way up the upper deck looking down the sideline. I go to find my seat and see that my seat has been taken by a few people, all of which were large. I figure its a pre-season game I’ll just move and not hassle them. I go two rows up to a wide open bench and sit. Sure enough a group of 4 women all of them HUGE, each an easy 300 pounds, bumble up to my new row and ask me to move over, which I did. They sit down and consume 7 full seats and nearly smash me off the end. There was not an inch of room between them, I seriously doubt they could have gotten any closer, one was twisted sidedways to save space and they still took up 7 seats, for 4 people. I got up once again and moved to another open area, with in 5 mins a large man who was nearing 300 himself, and his wife come sit next to me. He proceeds to tell me that he was supposed to sit a few rows down but could not fit because the people next to him were so large. I’m thinking your a fat ass yourself, what are you complaining about. The more I looked around the area I sat in, the more I realized that very few people were normal weight, alot were over weight but not so bad they took up the seat next to them. And then there were the double wides who accounted for 15-20% of the people there.

Because it was a pre season game it really was not an issue since the game was only about 75% full. But the ticket I bought had a face value of $64, I cannot imagine buying a full price ticket in a regular season game and having to sit the entire game with a fat ass smashing me and consuming most of the seat which I purchased. As a consumer of a product I seriously would be pissed off becasue the spot I paid for was taken up by someone who actually should have bought themselves 2 seats. Why should I be forced to be uncomfortable or move because of some fat ass?

I think it’s time where any business that sells a “seat” be it an airplane, train, bus or stadium event charge extra for people who take up more than one space.

I am sure the LR PC police will love this post- so have fun flame a away, but you know I am right. America needs a big FAT Diet.

amen!

and while we’re at it, can i get a 1/2 price ticket since i take up 1/2 the space of most normal people?

I think it’s also a midwestern thing. Every time I travel to the midwest (usually a few times a year, as I have family there) I’m always amazed by the sheer quantity of hugely obese people. I live in a very fit and active city in a very fit and active state, so yeah, my sense of ‘normal’ is a but skewed … but damn there are a lot of very fat people in this world. Sad, really; especially for the kids, who don’t seem to have much of a chance of ever leading a healthy active life.

while we are at it, how about 1/2 price for normal sized portions in restaurants. I’ve taken to ordering off the kids menu.

I hear you. My wife and I usually split and entree and a salad (and I’m a friggin Clydesdale!!).

LOL, stop reminding me!!

what gets me is television. granted, commercials and things are geared to each market–but 30 years ago people were pretty damn slim in magazines, television, etc.

today’s regular guy would have been the “fat guy” 30 years ago. today’s regular kid would have been the “fat kid” 30 years ago.

but yes, most people are fat as hell, it’s an epidemic. and it’s from poor food; too much of it; stress; and sitting all day that is killing us.

you can’t change or control others. all you can do is take care of yourself, and by leading from example, hopefully inspire others.

i look at it as a war–it’s you against the establishment that wants you to gorge every second. chocolate commercials are sexual; as are other food commercials and advertisements.

we are totally overwhelmed with messages of food and eating. and not only is food and eating shoved in our face every second; foods are coated with sugar and hydrogenated fats. plus you get a mountain of it!

it takes work, that’s what i’ve learned; alot of effort “to be different” in terms of eating and how one thinks about food.

just this past weekend my husband got upset with me because i didn’t want to eat my Max and Erma’s salad (that was drenched in sugar dressing, and had rotten spots on the lettuce). he called me a “food snob”, and just wants me to eat something without it being a big deal. i didn’t disagree about being called a food snob. hell, i think we should all be food snobs and aware of what we’re stuffing in our mouths!

besides, most food in restaurants like that is shit. i’m not going to eat it, period. so we made a deal; i’ll cook more, but if we go to restaurants like that, he’s not to expect me to eat mindlessly.

from now on if we eat out it’s going to be at a place that’s fresh and where the food doesn’t arrive in a box. so far so good.

it is exhausting to make better choices, to plan to eat better, and go against the grain of huge portions in restaurants, etc.
while it is exhausting to eat better, so is being 40 or 50 pounds over weight and suffering serious disease from it.

If you ask, everyone will look at you like you’re some sort of anti-obese person…I know, I’ve done it, and the flight attendant started a silly little speech about acceptance…

While on an airplane, and your seat space is jeopardized by the presence of an obese person, how do you politely and nicely ‘demand’ your full seat space?

On long flights, I’m thinking I have a right to the seat that I paid for. How do you “ask” for it back, especially if the flight if full?

I know that is the dilemma- how do you do it?

I’ll tell what was going through my mind last night- "Hey Fat Ass go on a freaking diet and get the F out of my space.

But instead I avoided the conflict not just once but twice, it really is an uncomfortable thing to deal with. When I called my wife last night I told her that if we ever buy tickets to take the kids to a game we will have to buy the lower level seat which have the stadium chairs with arm rests (not that it matters since next year the Colts will play in a new stadium) to hold fatty in their own space. But again that would be me being forced to do something to accommodate the Fat Asses. The bottom line for me is I can barely afford to take my family to a Colts game in the cheap seats to begin with let alone buy lower level stadium seats. So I guess I am left with just not going because I would not want to dump $400 in tickets for my family to go to a game only to be smashed by the lard nation.

I guess my question is why is the burden on us normal sized people? Why do we need to get up to find a new seat or lean over to make room? Or be but in the uncomfortable situation of having to ask them to make a hole or just plain suffer just because ole fatty can’t do the most simple exercise of pushing themselves away from the table? The burden should be on them they made the choice to be twice the normal size they should acknowledge the fact that they use more space and buy the extra ticket, but not me I did nothing wrong.

I wemt to the Boy Scout office the other day to get a book for a merit badge I was teaching. Throughout the office they had photos of kids doing Scout activities. One of the pictures was a bunch of kids sitting on the dock, getting ready to swim. It did not take a “Wheres Waldo” master to notice that more than 3/4 of the kids had spare tires! If a majority of kids are fat at 12-14 years old, that does not bode will for the future.

For a french man you sure have some balls…

You seriously asked? What did fatty say? Were they falling into you or forcing you to lean to one side to make space for them. WTF was the flight attendants speech and how did they get involved?

Hahaha, that’s hilarious. I have to remember that sometime. Luckily, I’ve only been next to an obese person one time that I can remember on a flight. Unfortunately, it was Shamu’s chain smoking grandmother, but I dealt with it.

Woohoo!

I like eating healthy. Food is so much tastier. Last night, I went to eat with a friend at a complete vegan restaurant here in Austin. I love that place because the food is so good and is much better than any of the crappy “healthy” food from most other restaurants.

I know I can’t change others as a matter of fact I really could care less about them, I am just trying to keep my head above water, be a good dad and husband and support my family. That is more than enough of a job to keep me busy let alone worry about folks I don’t know. The problem for me is that their choices are now effecting me personally that’s the problem.

Speaking of inspiring and “food snob”- I am the official food snob of my in-laws family. I apparently have be designated the family plumber ( I am not one by trade I just know how to do everything) so I was at my sister-in-laws house helping her husband as he finished their basement, I was running all new copper, re-installing their sump and installing a new ejector pump - basically everything to do with shit and water. So we stop for lunch, when I come up stairs I se that they had grilled one chicken breast just for me and had made a garden salad especially for me. Everyone else was eating brats and sausages chips and creamy salads. I appreciated the fact that were accommodating but, boy did feel weird like they went out of their way just for me. The only person the really need to worry about weight is my father-in-law, who actually does watch what he eats but doesn’t do enough to loose weight. What i find odd though is that instead of just cooking everyone grilled chicken they still ate ll the fatty stuff- I guess I am not inspiring.

I agree. I want to here more about the angry little French man’s rant about how he doesn’t respect America’s right to be fat asses.

(seriously, I want to hear more about it)

Go to a soccer game instead of football. In my own subjective experience, people associated with soccer are in much better shape than those around football. I went to a Chicago Fire game a couple years ago and it was tough finding a fat person. The parents of my son’s soccer team were all fit and healthy looking, as opposed to football team parents, who tend to be much closer to the (fat) average.

the population’s obesity effects all of us, that is the truth. it impacts our healthcare system, increases costs, etc. we pay for it–well before you felt the impact, it was there no doubt about it.

also–i would like to say “get off the ceiling”, as when i said you can’t control others; i didn’t mean that literally or directed towards you per say, and you seemed to get pretty fired up over that and defend yourself. i wasn’t attacking you, geesh.

everybody is always so wound up around here. it gets old.

No crap I feel like a sissy now. I let a Frenchman beat me in the the “standing up for myself” contest, I just can’t stand for that… I need to now more details, really what I’d like to know with how Disco, Lance and Contador are tied to this whole thing.

You can only control yourself. You can’t control your in-laws. I’m that way with my family. Whenever I go there, I pretty much have to buy my own food at the grocery store which consists of whole wheat bread, lunch meat, and apples. Otherwise, I’m left with options of Twinkies, frozen pizzas, donuts, Hot Pockets. None of these are that healthy. OK, I admit that I do indulge in stuff like donuts and pizza from time to time, but it is nowhere near an everyday thing and it’s only a treat once in awhile.

The good thing about your situation is that your family actually do something healthy for you. No such luck with my family so you should feel very fortunate and not embarrassed at all. Your family is respecting your choice to be a healthier person.

I don’t disagree, and to be honest I really attend more Triathlons than anything. But that does not change the fact that I love football, I really am a nut about it. Last year was awesome with my Colts winning it all. Why should I be the one who has to change becasue someone else has no self control?
