Fastest Helmet?

I don’t know about heat, but even if they were the exact same speed, I’d choose Wingdream over OG Aerohead every time.

The Wingdream visor is smaller than the OG aerohead visor, yet way better positioned, and thus actually gives you a better view of the road (I know, weirdly surprising that a smaller visor can work better). It’s also a bit floppier so it won’t crack as easily.

Much more space between your eyes/nose and the visor in the Wingdream. Makes all the difference if you want to reach in there to wipe some sweat, which is nearly impossible with the Aerohead. Less claustrophobic feeling.

I honestly though had zero issues wearing the OG aerohead at St George in 90+F. Maybe I was overheating up there and just didn’t notice it, but it didn’t feel abnormal to me like I wanted to get my hot helmet off.

You’re welcome. I just try to make people faster.

It depends. It’s been a long time since I’ve pitted an aero road helmet against a true aero helmet. I feel like I remember the aero road helmet being 8w slower, yet don’t quote me on that.

On the flip side of that, depending on your speed that’s roughly somewhere between 2-3 minutes. If you go the same speed that means you have to generate 8w more which also means you’re generating more internal heat to shed. Or you go 2-3minues slower meaning you have to pedal longer generating internal heat.

As far as how hot a helmet is, I’ve raced my OG aerohead in slightly over 100F temps a few times, 90-98F+ temps high humidity and was fine. On the other hand, if you comb through the archives here, you’re going to find multiple stories of people melting down in the OG Aerohead starting at temps as low as 80F. This is 1000% an “It depends” answer.

Sorry I can’t give you a go/no go answer, there just isn’t one. Hope that helps

Any thoughts on the new Scott Split MIPS. Being able to change tails is huge, and the deep tail is quite wide over the shoulders.

The new Oakley Velo TT seems to have an amazing field of view with a large visor

Might be a dead thread, but I wanted to ask if the MetDrone II is not allowed to be raced in US based Ironman events. Since it is not CPSC certified and Ironman states the following in the rule guidelines

  • ”Helmets must be approved by a national accredited testing authority and such
authority must be recognized by the World Triathlon and the relevant National
    Federation; (DSQ)”

I havent done any testing and currently use Giro Aerohead I. I tried the Rudy Wingdream, but with how low I hold my head in Aero it pushed the tail forward and so I cant see out of the helmet :frowning:

I have both helmets and the Aerohead is even harder to see out of in aero position compared to the Wingdream for me.

Shout-out to @Jim_EROsports he’s already answered your question:

So, I think with the Wingdream, it it’s now sort of our default go-to helmet. If you’re not going to test, and let’s face it, 99% of you are not going to test, just go buy the Wing Dream. It’s guaranteed to be fast. Not guaranteed to be fastest, but I think at this point pretty well guaranteed to be fast on you. It’s very comfortable. It’s easy to put on. You can hear because it’s not covering up your ears. The airflow is fantastic.

A good sign — you have non-sponsored athletes of different shapes and sized with access to whatever they want still wearing the Wingdream including Solveig Lovseth, Paula Findlay, Nick Thompson, Marten Van Riel, Kristian Høgenhaug and Sam Long.
