Fast Running in San Diego?

I recently moved into San Diego (PB, specifically), and have been looking for a solid running team/club/group to train with. Ideally, one with a structured weekly schedule of group workouts, geared towards XC/track/road racing.
I’ve tried searching these forums and googling for this, but any groups I find only meet once or twice a week, and are mostly focused on either the socializing or training for a first half/full marathon.

So, who knows where the legit running clubs are? I just finished four years of collegiate triathlon and went from zero running background to 17/37min 5k/10k’s, but would like to keep making gains. I’ve been running about 15-20mpw by myself, but I know I could do more if I had a structured schedule and other people to run with regularly. Thanks!

Or

SD Track Club should be the clubs you are looking for.

join the san diego triathlon club, which is a branch off from sd track club. If you were a bit faster, prado racing team.

Wiley, too bad I’m moving next month. I live in PB also (off Garnet and Soledad Mtn Rd), am a little faster, but a little older:) Like others said, check out TCSD and SDTC. You can also cruise Mission Bay Park and latch on to Meb’s heels when he flies by! I’ve seen him a couple of times as I believe he splits his time between Mammoth and here.

Best of luck.

You should try Paul Greer at sdcc or city college at the gym , his experience at 4mins miler should be ideal.

Let me just throw out there. Be very careful training with elite runners. These guys average 60-100mpw and have been doing this a long time. They aren’t doing 2x20, group rides or other cycling workouts 4-5 days a week. I had a friend that was a very talented triathlete and she had a coach pusing her with too mcuh speedwork and pretty soon her hip and knees were trashed. She obviously had underlying issues… but probably could have worked through them with the right program.

Just a word of warning. Don’t get swept up. Listen to your body in workouts. I think you push your cardio, but you can’t push leg fatigue too far.

I’ve visted San Diego once 2 years ago. You want to get stronger and faster, do lost of running on the off road trails at Balboa Park.

Lots of great running options in SD and you’ll be in good company as there are lots of fast individuals, clubs and events to push you.

Route Options:

  • Mission Bay Loop - can’t go wrong here, especially from PB
  • Rose Canyon - just east
  • Tecolote Canyon - just east
  • Balboa Park - a bit further drive away but great urban park with hills galore
  • Torrey Pines - further north
  • Mission Hills - further east
  • Penasquitos Canyon - personal favorite, north east of PB

Of course running on the beach is great for long runs and recovery runs.

Groups: The ones listed by previous posters are all good suggestions. Personal favorites are below:

  • Tri Club of San Diego - Wednesday night track at UCSD
  • San Diego Track Club - Tuesday night track under the lights at Balboa Stadium

Races: Too many to list. Raceplace’s website is a good place to start.

Enjoy – SD is an active city with no shortage of options!

Thanks, all! Looks like I’ve got some workouts to try out over the next couple weeks.
