The more I think about it, the happier I am that Faris won. He seems to embody all the things everybody mentioned in the “old school” thread. he eats junk food. he calls for coke early on in the marathon. he goes hardcore the whole race instead of just surviving until the run. In an interview last year he said that when he retires he will stay out of coaching because he gets bored with heart rates and other technical aspects of training. he seems pretty hardcore to me.
Yup. I like the guy. I feel awful for Stadler though. I like him too.
But Faris is a most worthy and timely champion. A fine character and a great athlete.
yeah always thought faris seemed like a good dude.
yeah, i hope that he will set an example for all triathletes to be less mathematical about their training and just go as hard as they can more often
.
absolutely. i think more people should just get out there and do it instead of arguing the aero of this or the weight of that
Yep, and now next year we all have to wear speedos and man bras. :o)
Dave
And he should keep wearing those nut-hugger Speedos! It gives me hope that they’ll be making a comeback ;-))

Suddenly everyone seems to be a Faris fan, when before IMAZ and IMH I would say that my favorite was Faris and people would go “WHO?”…
You’re such a trend setter. Who’s the one with his autographed bandana? That’d be me because you were too cool to get in line : )
You’re SUCH an age-grouper… ![]()
i think i’m going to get mine out for a few long rides this fall before it gets too cold. we’ll see how many people honk at me then.

I jumped on the ‘Faris-wheel’ in '03. At IMC he placed 3rd and told me he kinda messed up when he went out and rode the entire course 3 days before the race!! NOW THATS OLD SCHOOL!!!
I wore that Asics black/orange brief set-up at last year’s GFT, and caught a ton of shit about it from a few of the people on this forum. It was my *homage *to the go-go 90’s ![]()

people forget that the coke drinking, junk food eating, beer swilling, man bra wearing 35+ hour per week stud went sub 8 in 2004 at Roth. In 2003, he put his nose in the wind as long as he could and eventually got caught but was 5th (I believe), last year 3rd, this year, he won. He managed to do in 2005 what Wolfgang Dietrich was trying in the late 80’s early 90’s. Unfortunately for Wolfgang, he was up against the two greatest Ironman athletes of all time, Dave Scott and Mark Allen.
Check out these very “Faris Like” splits from 1993 on “not a fast bike day” (on that day, the fastest bike guy was Zack at 4:32):
4 WOLFGANG DITTRICH 00:48:35 04:38:17 02:56:27 08:23:19 0:14:11
1 FARIS AL-SULTAN GER 00:49:54 04:25:24 02:54:51 08:14:17

Personally I hope Faris starts a retro trend. I don’t know when/why/who those newer tri suits that leave dorky tan lines just above the knee became the thing to wear.
As for Faris himself, I’ve gotta (drum role please) give myself a big pat on the back for predicting that he would win.
Another feather in my cap for also predicting Badmann. But I shouldn’t bring that up because it might sound like I’m bragging. ![]()
I picked them too…who won that signed hat? did anybody have badmann al-sultan and dnf? it was too bad to see that molina had a rough race (not just because of the hat thing).
Personally I hope Faris starts a retro trend.
Done - I went out and bought my headband yesterday. I couldn’t find a man-bra (or bro? manzier?) so I just cut the torso off one of my old Iron Maiden rock shirts - now it just say “iron.” I already ride a Cannondale, so I figure I’m mostly halfway there.
Now if only I could grow the full face racing-stubble…I’d have the retro thing down.
Groovy, man.
Ive been a Faris fan even before IMAZ. Ever since the first pic I saw of the guy I knew he ruled. His pic was above my window last year, at the top of a beer pyramid I had stacked on my window overhang. I rule and so does Faris.
