Fareed Zakaria - Trump is right on Asylum

Though it was painful for him to admit. snip:

"FAREED ZAKARIA, CNN: Given President Trump’s mean spirited and often bigoted attitudes on immigration, it pains me to say this, but he is right, that the United States faces a crisis with its asylum system. Democrats might hope that the out-of-control situation at the southern border undermines Trump’s image among his base as a tough guy who can tackle immigration. But they should be careful. It could actually work to the president’s advantage.

Since 2014, the flow of asylum seekers into the United States has skyrocketed. Last year, immigration courts received 162,000 asylum claims. A 240 percent increase from 2014. The result is a staggering backlog with more than 300,000 asylum cases pending and the average immigration case has been pending for more than 700 days. It’s also clear that the rules surrounding asylum are vague, lax and being gamed. "

I don’t think anyone on this forum disagrees three is a crisis at the Southern Border. The big difference is, a wall won’t fix the crisis. It will do little to nothing to aid in the situation. Same with mass deportation, it doesn’t help to solve the problem, it only works to bolster the division.

The only area in which I disagree with Zakaria is in how he views Trump’s view of what is going on. Trump doesn’t necessarily call it a crisis but an invasion.

Yes, he’s right. Particular re solutions:

But a much larger fix is needed. The criteria for asylum need to be rewritten and substantially tightened. The number of courts and officials dealing with asylum must be massively expanded. People should not be able to use asylum claims as a way to work in America. There needs to be a much greater cooperation with the home countries of these applicants rather than insults, threats and aid freezes.

gee maybe we should go back and look up what some posters here have said about it in the past… things like Trump made up crisis, there is no crisis etc… funny how quickly the facts have changed now all of a sudden.

//Trump made up the invasion//

What’s the beef with the word ‘invasion’? When it rains we get in invasion of ants in our garage…doesn’t mean they’re an organized army with weapons trying to kill us. Given the numbers arriving at the border and overwhelming issues this is causing, why can’t it be called an invasion?

‘An incursion by a large number of people’; ‘an unwelcome intrusion into another’s domain’

Aside from the first definition - 'influx, inundation, rush, violation, infringement, disturbance, breach…

It’d be easier to just divide posters between those who use terms like “illegals” versus those who use terms like “illegal immigrants, undocumented immigrants”.

Having actually filed multiple asylum cases and worked in this area from such wonderful areas as Rwanda, Liberia, Georgia, Croatia, …, I think this comment is nonsense. We don’t grant asylum to people from countries that are ‘cooperative’. People who get asylum come from the ‘shitholes’ of the world. The Northern Triangle of Central America, Burma, Congo, other east and central African countries, … We don’t take asylees from Great Britain and Canada and their citizens don’t seek it.

What cooperation are you going to get from a country that is abusing and killing their own citizens, not in control of militias within their borders, allowing abuse and violence against religious or ethnic groups? If they were cooperative their citizens wouldn’t be leaving and seeking asylum. They aren’t on a day trip. They are leaving everything they have and everyone they know, including family, to try to find a place to live.

you are probably right. I did a quick search. There were only 2 comments I could find and weren’t note worthy. My mistake. I didn’t look really hard but I was pretty sure there were some comments this whole thing was made up by Trump… cant find them so point conceded.

I read that to mean cooperation with countries where asylum should not able to be claimed. People that come from countries because they can’t get a good job.

what are the statistics of those people seeking asylum? I bet most from central america. in my mind that’s not a reason and its the reason there is such a back log now and making it extremely difficult for the people who actually need asylum.

So Mexico? I looked quickly (because I am going to Canada to celebrate the 4th of July ) and couldn’t find recent numbers of country of origin of asylum seekers. I can find it for those granted asylum but not seekers.

Other than Mexico I’m not coming up with anywhere that would be sending asylum seekers that would also have any hope of cooperation.

The man and his daughter that died at the border were from Guatemala right? He was coming here for a better job, not because of Asylum. I’m not arguing working with countries would fix anything, I’m just interpreting the quote.

The current situation in the Northern Triangle is pretty bad. The governments aren’t in much control and when they are they are as bad as those they aren’t controlling.

These are the kind of areas we give temporary protected status to. Places where the danger is not thought to be a permanent risk or due to natural disaster, etc. But Trump ended TPS for quite a few. https://www.afsc.org/blogs/news-and-commentary/trump-has-ended-temporary-protected-status-hundreds-thousands-immigrants

I don’t necessarily disagree with not making TPS essentially permanent, but those people should also have the ability to get permanent asylum if there is not hope of their country of origin improving to where they don’t need TPS.

Not sure. While the picture and the result is horrific, we can’t make national policy off of that. I am talking more generally.

My point is that the government of countries that would cooperate aren’t the kind of places asylum seekers come from.

I believe it was San Salvador and that country president says his country is to blame for the deaths…

But he’s on CNN and I thought they were nothing but fake?

I’ve always admired Zakaria and was often shut down for saying that, simply because he’s on CNN. If people are going to suddenly agree with him, will they also admit that not all journalists are evil just because Trump says so?

I believe it was San Salvador and that country president says his country is to blame for the deaths…

San Salvador is a city (and capital) in El Salvador
.

Lol thanks! 😀
