Fall 70.3 on East Coast

If you were to do 1 fall (September or later) 70.3, which would it be? Would like to stay within a 12 hour drive from Boston area.

Looking this year, so cant be sold out already.

Pumpkinman - Sept 7 - http://pumpkinmantriathlon.com/
Savageman 70.0 - Sept 14 - http://www.setupevents.com/?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=2594

… nothing like ending the season with some savage suffering…

Toughman.

or Rev3 Pocono.

Both RD’s put on excellent events.

OR both -

Check out the new Niagara Falls Barrelman Triathlon on September 21st. Around 7 hours drive from Boston.

Well I don’t think there’s any WTC races within driving distance, aside from Princeton, but that’s sold out. But that’s probably for the best, since I always enjoy the local races much more! There’s a ton of local races that time of year, and I always feel like I’m missing out on good ones.

Pumpkinman is great, but may already be sold out. There’s a half in Montauk the last weekend of September that is also really cool. Small race, but well run, good course, and plenty of support. One of my favorites along with Musselman and Pumpkinman.

Rev3 is putting on a half in the Poconos middle of Sept. Beautiful area. Great place for a race. Definitely won’t be hot.

Savageman is supposed to be awesome and possibly the toughest in the sport, though I haven’t had the chance to do it yet. I’ve also heard good things about Toughman outside of NYC.

Whatever you choose though, you should also add Lobsterman (oly) to your schedule if you haven’t done that race before and end up doing a late Sept half.

SAVAGEMAN. Hopefully, even without Kyle, it’ll remain among the best races in the area. I trust that he selected the new stewardship with purpose. You can’t find a better race. Period.

Outer Banks Tri http://www.outerbankstriathlon.com/

both flat, fast and about 12 hrs drive away…worth the drive
.

Firmman Rhode Island.

Good low key, inexpensive race.

New event called PilgrimMan down in Plymouth starting up this year. Prize money for top finishers if your of that breed

Another vote for Toughman, really well organized race.

I like races where there’s just enough people that you’re never pedaling for a while and see nobody. Timmerman is a good example of just the right amount of racers. Rev3 OOB was a great race, but the bike was desolate at times.

If you recommended 1 race in September, which one? Same thing for October?

Savage man is out for me this year.

B2B is on my shortlist for sure! As are a couple of the newer races mentioned here.

Toughman looks awesome, but is early in the month, not out but the date isn’t helping me get to that race.

Big George 70.3 labor day weekend. Lake George NY. It’s the " Queen of the lakes". One of the cleanest lakes in the country.
Part of the Lake George Triathlon festival. Olympic and Half. Great location and the Adirondack Race Management guys know how the put on a race.
Lot’s of hotels and stuff to do with the family. If you have a family. 3.5 hrs from Boston.

I would second Firmman in RI and Mightyman Montauk. Both smaller low key races.

Pumpkinman is the one you want. Less than 2 hours from Boston. Awesome race.

+1 on Pumpkinman and alos one of those easy in and out races where set up is Race morning, you can check in the day before, but I like these same-day check in halfs - To me just easier and less to do and prep-wise can be less walking / more resting day before. Smaller feel race, but very well run, and pretty well laid out as well

Though - if the race dir knew what they were doing, clockwise swim instead - LOL - inside joke

Another for Pumpkinman if you’re going to exclude Rev3 OOB. Poconos should be awesome as well.

OP: Although if you’re calling Rev3 OOB with 1500+ between the half and Olympic last year small…you’re in for a bit of a surprise with many of these events we’re recommending. But you’re asking for the best events, not the biggest…

The Timberman bike course is awful (unless you’re in one of the first waves). Too many people, too many no-passing zones, too many cars on course, too many sketchy turns, bad pavement, and just about as boring as can be.

Everything recommended here will have less people, but will be much more scenic, safe, and enjoyable to ride.

“The Timberman bike course is awful”

I didn’t mind the bike course as much as I minded having to get in line to park at 3:50 AM when my wave went off at 7:50…and then having them schedule the awards for 5 PM in an apparent attempt to convince people to stay an extra night.

At Pumpkinman, I left my house ~15 miles north of Boston at ~4:30 AM…got to the race site just before 6. Set up, ready to go by the start at 7. Awards ceremony at ~1 during the awesome Thanksgiving Dinner they provide. Probably 5X as many people at this awards ceremony than had been at Timberman, a race with 6X as many people. Home by 3PM in time to watch the end of the Patriots game.

Now that is the way to do it…

Recommending 1 race for September, has to be Pumpkinman. October is a little harder, don’t think I’ve actually every race a triathlon on the east coast (definitely not in the Northeast) that late. If you want to go South I think Rev3 is doing their Carolina race again.
