A true story…
About 2 weeks ago was my wedding. 90 minutes before the ceremony, we (my brother and I) figured that we’d better put on the suits and join the other groomsmen for the pix. Both suits were hanging on the rack and as we opened the bags, we simultaneously discovered…no pants on the hanger? Immediately, we accused my Uncle, other groomsmen and everyone else around us of a good joke. Good joke? No, it was no joke. It took a while to figure out, but each us us had, independently arrived without the slacks for our suits.
My brother catapulted into action, calling my cousin to stop by the condo and look for the pants on the closet floor. I hopped in a borrowed Mini-Cooper with my Uncle for the drive back home (about 15 miles). Doing the best I could and thinking under pressure, I had on my dress shirt, tie, socks, wingtips and some running shorts, barely visible underneath my untucked shirt. Now, Mini-Coopers are both fast and fun and this was my first time driving one, so in a panic to get home, find the pants and get back, my speed hit about 100-110+MPH on the freeway. Less than a mile from my exit, we blew by a California Highway Patrol. He got me; @#$%%; I slowed and stopped, awaiting an embarassing ticket that was only adding to the delay.
“I suppose you know why I stopped you?”
With a sigh I answered “Yup”.
“License and registration, please” was his reply. I dug out my license and asked my Uncle to find the registration in the glove box. He handed over the registration to the CHIP officer who answered with
“Is this a good address in Chino”.
I replied “No, I can give you the correct address”.
He asked (looking at the registration) “Irvine?” I explained that it was a borrowed car and I could give him the correct address.
My Uncle (God Bless the man…) looked the CHIP in the eye and said (pointing at me)
“Would it help if I offered an explanation? He’s the groom. The wedding’s in an hour and he has no pants.” I saw the CHIP get a big (and I mean big) grin on his face.
He asked me “where are your pants?”.
I answered “I hope they’re at home”…
“Where’s home?”…
“about 3 blocks over there” I answered. He turned to my Uncle and said with a snicker
“I was wondering why he didn’t have any pants on”…
I got an early wedding present when he folded the registration, handed back my license and told me to try to drive a little slower. He got a great story to take back to his buddies at the end of the shift.
Both my brother and I made it back on time, with pants and everything went off without a hitch. People kept coming up to me at the reception, though, and saying how good I looked…especially with pants on.
Enjoy the Ironman Weekend…
