So I go to Kits pool this morning and it’s closed due to the C.U.P.E strike
Anyone in the Vancouver area know if this is all pools or just outdoor/kits ? How about Burnaby ?

Yeah it blows… UBC is open. 50m outdoor.
There’s always the ocean.

Busted, hehe. My masters group shut down when the VAC closed for the summer, so I’ve been focusing on my bike (which is coming around quite nicely thank you) for the last couple of weeks. Anyway I finally get my ass out of bed early enough to get a swim in and …
Think I’ll head to UBC or the lake after work.
Daryl, what’s C.U.P.E?
Canadian Union of Public Employees. Basically they want more money. I think it was 23% over 5 years. If they did not work for the city then they would be lucky to get 2.5% every year.
The funny thing was that they were pissed off at volunteers for picking up the garbage around town after the fireworks of late. They publicly stated that they wanted people to leave the garbage laying around to force the managers to have to deal with it. This way they get more play in regards to their situation.
Ya that is a good idea, tell people that you are pissed off that volunteers are cleaning the city while the CUPE works complain they do not make enough. While I am very sure they are making good money, a raise every single year is not a given in most work environments. Also it does not sit well with the public with the complaining. It just makes people less sympathetic in their situation.
Maybe they should be worried that the volunteers did such a great job and that they are maybe not worth the money after all.
It’s the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
23%! Wow, I need to get in on that! We didn’t make the rate of inflation on our last negotiations! AS for moaning about volunteers, that’s crazy!
While I am not sure of the situation on the west coast - the shame of this is that many of the lifeguards are summer hires only - usually students trying to make univeristy money. Even though they are only seasonal, they are automatically in the union, but have absolutely no voting rights - either to go on strike or accept a contract. As such, they simply lose employment, and becasue they are seasonal with no history, can gather little or no strike pay.
Been there in Ontario in the 70s - ended up working in a plastic factory molding dashes for Ford for a month.
At least you did not end up with a sunburn during that summer ![]()

How is it smelling over on that side of the straight? I’m coming to Van this weekend and am a little afraid. My GF’s apartment literally sits between two garbage rooms. Normally it’s fine, but I’m scared to ask her how it smells. And not sure I’d trust the answer anyway!
well - we did get part of the season in - so not totally - probably did more damage to myself sucking back all the toluene fumes that permeated the plant. Very little in the way of envrionmental controls back then.
