Wind tunnel tests seem to suggest that a Bento box smoothes some of the stem turbulence and improves drag.
Use 3M double sided tape from Home Depot. There are two kinds. The one without the foam backing works best.
Cut a 1/4" wide strip where the Vittoria Flat Fix touches the top tube and 3M black electrical tape (seems to work best) from Office Depot around the edges.
The shampoo bottle has a slot on the bottom (cut with a Dremmel tool) that mates to the diameter of the top tube, then affixed with the 3M double sided tape and black tape on edges.
Inadvertenly I have kicked the bottles and leaned the bike against a post and they stay centered and stuck.
The plan is in the advent of a flat, (ulikely since I will use Tufo sealant prior to race), I will try the Vittoria first, then the spare tube, then resort to patches.
Initial tests on BikeTechReview show a very small degradation for rollining resistance with sealant in the tire.
Lighten and simplicate - always trying to keep things lighter - although 3 regular bike bottles for a long training ride weigh about 5.4# for 72oz of water.
One large (38oz -1 liter) bottle weighs 42g emtpy and 1061g (2.33lb) full. The X-Lab FlatWing (below the seat) set up as in the picture works OK for that load - 2 large bottles (4.7#).
However the X-Lab SaddleWing (the directly behind the seat model - at seat height) has a 3lb limit sticker in it - which means it is not fully rated for 2 full typical 24oz bottles as they weigh 99g empty and 826g full (1.82#) - 3.64# for two and the two 1 liter bottles would be way over spec.
Also some frame mounted cages may not be rated for 1 liter bottle weight - you would need to experiment to see if it worked.
Generally the bottles that come with water in them are considerably lighter than standard bike bottles. The diameter is just a whisker smaller than standard bike bottles. Commercial water bottles are cheap and can be discarded as the ride progresses.
Those weights above are for water whereas sugar/electrolyte solution would be a bit heavier.
i went with the podium quest aero water bottle…fits my vision bars perfect…cannot tell from your pictures what type of bars you have. the podium quest holds 52oz (i think). my plan is to run the podium quest as my only water bottle in half ims and down…should be plenty of hydration. nice since it has two separate compartments for fluid. also, does not splash or leak as much as the profile design aero bottle.
