I am looking into baying a disc and since I want to travel the world and race with it as well,
I can´t get super priced one.
The RENN discs are good in price, does anybody have any experience from them, good or bad?
I have only heard good stuff!
I have an older one (2004) I bought used. I love it. It is a bit heavier than the brand new zipp discs but for the price and on a flat to rolling course it is perfect. I’ve never had a different disc though, so I can’t compare.
Yup - you will find little to no issues with a Renn disc (I have zero issues with mine) except a few claiming they can flex it some when standing, climbing in the hills and touching the brakes (and act I don’t do/worry about much with tris/time trialing). But, when I did try this as a “test” - I couldn’t detect anything. I’m about midpack as far as power/watts go.
I am what you might call a power rider. I have recorded upwards of 1800 watts in an all out sprint. I have a Renn 575 disk. I have never noticed any flexing in it.
If you’re going to be needing the Renn anytime soon, you need to get your order in. I don’t want to speak for them and say how long it takes. I’m sure that varies. But after I placed my order, I called several days later for status and was told it would be another couple of weeks. They managed to beat that, but you can’t just call today and have a disk the day after tomorrow.
I bought mine (04 model) used in 05 and liked it a lot at first but after that I had a few issues with it. First of all it’S not very stiff to say the least! Second the bearings gave in after 300 miles total so I had to have them replaced. Then in spring of 06 I heard a strange squeaking noise from the hub in one of the races. I emailed the manufacturer and he told me there were a few hubs that had not been sufficiently lubricated at the “factory” and sent me a link to a “hidden” part of his website where they explain how to solve the probelm. Anyway I had to take the wheel to my LBS again.
If not for the fact that I payed $ 200 for the wheel I am not sure whether I would buy one again…
I bought a Kaiser last year and use it for both racing and training - so I have A LOT of miles on it.
I love it.
Last year the wait was 6 weeks. Buy one now for next year and you won’t regret it.
No offense but you paid the LBS to fix the squeak? The “hidden” part of the website is a link on the front page…and the fix is as simple as loosening 1 screw and putting some lube in the hub.
You’ve heard mostly good things about Renn because they are very, very nice. We’ve sold a fair number of them and they are dependable and fast. For the price, it is tough to beat unless you go to something like fabric covers which some people like.
The best value for the dollar I have spent on Tri Equipment is my Renn Disc. I had one of the original Renn discs in 2002, then got a 575 in late 2005. Frank at Renn absolutely stands behind his product. I have not owned another disc but have compared it to my freinds Zipp and the hub is at least as smooth as the Zipp. Yes the weight my be slightly heavier then the zipp, but for my money I would definitely get the Renn.
You will hardly ever hear of a person who purchased the renn complaining about it. The hubbs that went out that needed lubricating was well published by Renn and not a hidden issue. It involved taking out three allen wrench screws dropping some lube in then tightening the screws. If you had a problem and could not do it Renn said to ship the wheel to them and they would take care of it themselves at no cost to you.
I have yet to experience the flex in the disc that people are referring about.
Buy the Renn you will not regret it. Just order it early!
I raced for a couple of years on one of the original RENN disks and traded up for a 575 RENN two years ago. No issues at all with it. Aside from it being a great wheel, RENN is the kind of company that I prefer to do business with when given the choice. It’s kind of like Desoto, you call and more then likely you are going to deal directly with the owner, who in both cases takes a very personal hands on approach to their business.
Great experience and didn’t take long to get. Flex is not an issue that I have noticed and I’m a big boy. I got a silver Kaiser disc that looks great, rolls true, and is a fantactic value. I really have been impressed with the product and the service.
I got one of the 575s off of the classifieds here. Got a good deal and it was in great shape. Took it out on a rolling 13 mile loop that has some rollers, a couple of short but steep climbs and one long steady climbs. This is the first disc I have ever ridden.
The verdict, it was FAST. Once up to speed on the flat sections it seemed like I could hold speed (22-24mph) with slightly less effort than usual. On the rollers where I can stay in the big chain ring and aero position, it seemed to help the bike carry more momentum up and over the little rollers. On the short steep climbs I tried to make it flex but couldn’t notice anything, besides, in an IM I don’t plan on standing and mashing like that too often, so even if it had a little flex I know that I will be spinning up hills and not powering up them. On the long steady climb I didn’t notice too much drag from the extra weight.
It was pretty windy and I noticed a little push here or there, but not too much. I did notice that in a high speed decent the bike wanted to track straighter than normal and any turns you could notice it a little, but not too bad.
The verdict, it was a great disc for the price and will be on my bike at IMoo in two weeks!
I love mine, I had a last minute trip pop up and Frank got it to me quickly. I have about 300 miles on mine and I love it, I have no complaints, it was $500 well spent (I got it right before they went up to $520). I was worried about it flexing into the brake pads, but I have never experienced it, even when climbing out of the saddle, I’m 6’3 and about 172 lbs, No problems.
